What Else Could It Be?

GTI6BOY

Hi, this is going to be difficult to explain.

My cti moves from side to side as you go over dips in the road ect. its more the front end i think, so it does not feel safe as im driving round slight corners as its all over the place. I am comparing it to my gti which does not even move.

So far i have put brand new koni shock all round, drop links, all new top mounts, and the car has a gti subframe fitted so i have gti suspension. not sure what eles would make the car do this.

A couple of things i think it could be (as i have never had one) are: The car being a cti and not having the roof structure?, My power steering?

any ideas please

wishbones, track rod ends or even just the tracking?

wishbones are fine.

Would track rod ends cause this much movement?

It's not a trait of the cti,nor did I have a problem on a cti with gti suspension and PAS. I have had the wandering due to badly adjusted tracking

My lowered cti has a totally shagged track rod end, to the point that the wheel wobbles sometimes on braking (yeah, I know- but it's all got to come off anyway when I put the gti gear on this one) But it doesn't suffer from the wandering curse! Sometimes appears that even thinking about replacing any front suspension item on these cars requires the tracking to be re-set!

The worst I've ever had was after having the tracking adjusted at quick-fit (never again) on a Sunday morning- a visit to my normal place on monday and it was fine! Have it loked at by someone who's proved themselves in the past

My old Cti used to be a bit erratic through the corners, and I had ovaling of the lower hub carrier, replaced it problem solved took me nearly 2 years to work it out.

Knackered bearings in the rear beam?

This has happened to me. I, like you exhausted all front end options almost to dispair, and then my old man suggested a tad of rear steer might be the cause. I hope it is just tracking or an ovalled hub fixing or just a track rod end, but don't discount this possibility. It gives a turn in/snatch and then if you push through it gets all vague and wandery (!).

I'm convinced that's the case with my car, and will be delivering my 309GTi rear beam to Anthony soon for a leisurely 3month windowed refurb. Check the camber is even on both rear wheels. One of mine was way off and people following me reported it got a lot worse when cornering.

Gut feeling this is your issue matey.
