oops! took the engine apart yesterday and the oil pickup was rammed full of grit and bits of pistin and the oil pump chain was snapped - although probably a symptom not a cause

still no idea what happened though :D the valves are all intact (bar the ones that got munched by the piston!) the piston has disintegrated but the head gasket was fine, and the bottom end was fully rebuilt last february :(

any ideas how i would find out what went? or is it just "one of those things (aka french)" ;):P

Not sure what went but all i can say is ouch!

Purhaps the piston wanted a change of scenary and thought it would break loose, i mean as said it is french after all, probably went on strike!

Get somebody to take a look at the liner (whats left of it!) and see if there are any tell tale signs of cracks. I know of another engine that did something similar on cylinder 3 (stayed in the block though). The liner cracked causing the cylinder to fill with water and 'hydraulic' causing destruction as it went on its way....

ahh yes that liner has a big crack down it! would that be likely to be a cause not a symptom then? what causes liners to crack??

Age for one, lack of coolant changes aswell, revlimit abuse can also contribute ;)

It will be difficult to tell, you can normally see if the crack is old or new by the colour of it. If its a dark rustyish colour it is likely the crack is an old one and could be the cause, if the crack looks nice and shiny and silver it could be caused by the conrod smashing its way through it.

Same sort of thing that happened to mine put in a different place on the rod, My big end bolt sheared off and caused no 3 to come out front and back with No4 almost following it and catching on Fire, But the rod seem's to have failed seen a couple like that now causing the mess, As with any std part they are getting old and most have had a somewhat hard life.
