Starting Problems

Recommended Posts

lyncho23

hi all, just a quick question.

my car is being very tempremental lately when im starting it, sometimes it starts fine and other times it will tick over and then sound weaker and weaker and wont start.

also on a couple of occasions it doesnt do anything, you can just hear a click?

any ideas why it may be doing this? maybe battery? or possible knackered starter motor?

oh and one more thing, when it first started doing this i noticed that the red wire that goes to the live on the battery and then to a relay was loose, i tightened this and it seemed a bit better but it keeps doing it again even after ive made sure its a tight connection.

thanks in advance for any replies

Check all connections, youve listed one but follow the wires there are more.

Pay particular attention to the earth lead, it should go onto the gearbox one end off the battery and onto the body the other side of the battery. Take them off and give them a little clean and see what happens.

Does also sound like your battery isnt holding much charge if its loosing cranking speed quickly.

sounds like the wire to the starter motor is starting to break down, next time it does it try running a wire direct from battery live to the starter solenoid wire, it should spin no problem, if it does then you can rule out a faulty starter and just replace the wire between the soenoid and the ignition

I sounds like the charge is dropping during cranking so I'd expect it is either a faulty battery or a faulty positive wire. Get a new positive wire from a newer XU engined Pug in the scrapyard and if that doesn't solve it get your battery health checked.
