Recommended Posts

i am supposed to be pickng up a set of front hubs and shafts for my 1.6 upgrade, but the bloke tells me the car is badged as a .9 has 1.9 wheels and engine but has drum brakes or the rear?? :D

did the 1.9 ever come with drum brakes?

or does anyone know how many splines are on the front hubs on a 1.6 compared to a 1.9?

or any other tell tale ways or ID'ing them

The 1.9 GTI always had rear discs.

Sounds like it's just a 1.6 with the engine and badges swapped.

front disc offset is much larger for 1.6 brakes, the VIN number should tell you also.

For some reason i'm thinking that some of the Jap market destined models had drums instead of discs on the rear, not sure though.

The 1.9 driveshafts have two grooves machined into them on the bit you can see, that's if you can get a look at the shafts.

Early Australian delivered 1.9L GTi's had drum brakes. They were essentially a 1.6L GTi body with the DFZ engine.

1.9L hubs have a pin through the 35mm hub nut, where as 1.6L hubs have a smaller staked nut, no pin.

More likly to be the Auto version as said, the hub's on these are not 1.9 one's and not all 1.9 shafts have the pin and locking nut if they have been changed with pattern parts, If OE then 100% but after that is anyones guess
