One Of Driving Lights Has Stopped Working And My 205 Is Booked In For

Recommended Posts

Atari Boy

Can anyone help? As above really, my 89 phase 1.5 1.6 GTi is booked in for its MOT next Saturday.

The O/S driving light does not work; I have checked the bulb so I know it is not that. If anyone has any experience or tips with the wiring I would be very grateful.

I have the Haynes book of lies which includes a wiring diagram but just hoping that I can learn from others experiences/woes.

Many thanks

Jonny

I think that if they are on the car then they need to be working. Same rule as flst spare tyre v's no spare tyre. If it is flat then you fail if it not there then happy days.

Don't worry, they're not needed! Trace the wiring back to the plug behind the headlights (yellow IIRC) and clean the connections. Like most of the connectors in this area they are prone to corrosion

or just disconnect the one that is working for the mot, if your mot is close

I was told that if nether work it is ok, but if they come on with main beam and one is not working then it is a fail as lights must be symetrical to either side.

So as said before just disconnect the none working one.

doesnt matter if its flat, bald, square etc, it aint a failure. the mot tester will pass and advise to draw your attention to the problem. it will only fail if its loose and theres a chance it may drop out.

same with spot/fog lights. they dont have to work for the mot.

I have heard stories about mong testers failing cars because they come on with main beam, and mistaking them for fog lights :D

Don't know how true that is though :D

Then again, I suppose it's feasible that some less than clued up owner has replaced them with eBay fog lights not knowing the difference!

Find the connection from the driving light to the loom, give it a wiggle and maybe just pull it apart slightly, always seems to work for me...

Super Josh

When you've cleaned up the connector, put some grease in it to stop it corroding again

Having one driving light not working does NOT fail the MOT, my old XS passed with only 1 working. It got a comment, but no mention on the form.

Also check contacts within bulb holder are not in any way corroded at all - had this problem with one of my indicators.
