How Do I Assess Condition Of F/hubs & D/shafts?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Before I consider attempting to sell them, I'm interested in assessing the condition of the front hubs and driveshafts that I've taken off my car.

The balljoint holes don't appear ovalled to me (1. is it obvious to the naked eye when they are?) but I'm worried about the wheel bearings. The bearings spin freely enough but there appears to be a little play in the disc flanges - they can be wobbled ever so slightly perpendicular to the direction of rotation. 2. Is some play normal? This play didn't show in the wheels when everything was together and I've had no noises from the front end at all.

The driveshafts appear to have good CVs and inner joints but there is a little play between the shafts and the joints. I suspect that some is normal - 3. is this the case? 4. And how do I decide whether or not the intermediate bearing is OK on the O/S shaft - again, it has a little play.

Sorry for the list but any advice greatly appreciated :(

some slight play in the joints is normal, the intermediate bearing is easy to replace cheaply so I wouldnt worry about that.

you may well get a little play in the hub bearing if its not bolted up to the driveshaft.

all clips etc in place and secure?

Thanks Welshpug

sounds as though they're ok then

by clips, do you mean the boot straps? the boots need replacing, which is something i'd make clear if offering them. i've not had any of the joints off, so the circlips should be as they should be
