Manifold - Down Pipe

Recommended Posts

CaptainP

Fitted another manifold to my GTi tonight due to the old one having a huge crack in it. Tightened up the bolts that go into the head squarely and with new gaskets, now it's blowing worse than it was before!! I have a new manifold - downpipe kit here which I've just nabbed which I'm going to fit tomorrow as I think it's blowing on the O style gasket. Do you use any sealant on this or do you rely on the springs and bolts to make a decent seal?

Cheers

Steve

no sealant, just the fire ring.

Hi !

Maybe this helps - Just something i have found on my car when changing mainfold gaskets and mesh ring - first i've fit all this items new on reconditioned engine , then start the engine and there was nasty tappety noise on cold starts and on fully warm engine :( ...

This is what i found :

The mainfold casting on corners wasn't flat level (don't know how to describe that sorry ;) but it was pitted with craters deeply below gasket surface on left and right mainfold corners) and it was blowing out on these two corners (as you can see on pictures) , even when i use new mainfold gaskets and tight all bolts to specified torque (20Nm) still it wasn't good , so next time i use some high temp. sealant togheader with mainfold gaskets reseal back and it's good now :)

Regards

Damir
