j_turnell 137 3 Cars Posted April 26, 2007 You need to check your valve clearances as these will more than likely will be the cause, unless you injectors are loud. Re-shimming is quite time consuming as the cam needs to come off, therfore the cambelt needs to be replaced, and tbh you may aswell replace the tensioner and water pump while your at it. First off get your valve clearances checked and see what the tolerances are like. Only the rocker cover needs to come off for this, not major surgery. GTI_Lee 0 Posted April 27, 2007 ok thanks. what should the valve clearences be on these? lee
Super Josh 4 Posted April 27, 2007 ok thanks. what should the valve clearences be on these? lee Buy a Haynes manual, if you don't have one already. Get the older 'Owners Workshop Manual' (orange cover) rather than the later 'Service and Repair' one. As the former has a lot more info in it. Josh
Grim.Badger 15 Posted April 27, 2007 Leaking exhaust manifolds and incorrect fuel (causing pinking) can also cause tappyness.
pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted April 28, 2007 Check your exhaust manifold for cracks & leaks. I got the valve clearances done on my first GTi thinking they were noisey & it made no difference, turned out the exhaust manifold was cracked & making all the noise. Graham. ALEX 98 1 Cars Posted April 29, 2007 Or worn valve guides. If the head has done over 100,000 miles then chances are it's not only the valve clearences are out of tolerance.
