You need to check your valve clearances as these will more than likely will be the cause, unless you injectors are loud. Re-shimming is quite time consuming as the cam needs to come off, therfore the cambelt needs to be replaced, and tbh you may aswell replace the tensioner and water pump while your at it.

First off get your valve clearances checked and see what the tolerances are like. Only the rocker cover needs to come off for this, not major surgery.

Buy a Haynes manual, if you don't have one already. Get the older 'Owners Workshop Manual' (orange cover) rather than the later 'Service and Repair' one. As the former has a lot more info in it.

Leaking exhaust manifolds and incorrect fuel (causing pinking) can also cause tappyness.

Check your exhaust manifold for cracks & leaks.

I got the valve clearances done on my first GTi thinking they were noisey & it made no difference, turned out the exhaust manifold was cracked & making all the noise.

Or worn valve guides.

If the head has done over 100,000 miles then chances are it's not only the valve clearences are out of tolerance.
