In desperate need of a gti6 block. The 406 2.0 16v engine looks identical but is the block the same? maybe somebody could check on the parts cd?

I was wondering the exact same last night! The conclusion i came to from asking others questions and from searching was that yes, the S16 ones are, and the earlier 406 ones are, but the later 406 blocks don't have the oil spray bars. It's the innards that are different. Don't take it from me as gospel though, as you say, if someone could check on parts Cd etc would be more of a solid answer! ;)

part numbers are different, but thats not to say you could use one.

one thing that came to mind is that the later 306/406 J4R engines may not use the oil spray bars and still have the oil galleries but plugged?

definitely something to look into maybe as I doubt peugeot would mass produce two such similar blocks if thats all they had to do?

As said the S16 + 8V Turbo XU10J2TE is different but all the external drillings are there but allot of hassle to plug and swap over, Never seen the R block but if not being used in anger I can;t see not having the spray bar's being a issue

I saw in a thread i found after a search last night that the 406 blocks up to about 95 had the spray bars, after they didn't any longer, i think it was BlackMi16 that posted it. Not sure whether they'd even have the oil galleries on the later one, as PeterT said he's always disregarded the j4r's as being useless - until the above info was given, and i would've thought he'd have investigated that previously.

This picture shows that some J4R's do have spraybars, but it's only some 1995 models that have it afaik.

Maybe 605 and early 406?

I certainly didn't realise that some J4R's had spray bars. The XU10J4 (S16/Mi16) still remains my weapon of choice, as you get the spray bars, larger 23mm floating gudgeon pins and all the better oil control. And you can bolt on what ever head on it you like!

So an S16 block can definitely be used with a '6 head, and does have the spray bars? Just checking... ;):)
