Bent Valve From Tightening Crank Pully?

Recommended Posts

Guest edcotic

so i took the 205 out for a run after rebuilding the bottom end and it appears to have developed a tappet type top end noise while it's been off the road (one month)

balls

i've read alot about slightly bent valves causing a clicking which got me thinking...

when i was tightening the flywheel and crank pulley the engine rotated and appeared to come accross a point of resistance

1. could this have been a valve (surely only if the timing was well out)

2. would a valve be able to withstand being hit by a piston which is being turned by a spanner

also, how long do the tappets take to become fully lubricated? the engine was drained and sat for about a month but the top end was not dismantled

cheers

Ed

unless the top end was locked in place I cant see how you could have bent a valve, did you lock the flywheel/crank while tightening the bolt?

tappets take a while to fill once drained, you would feel resistance (more than cylinder compressing) if you had piston to valve contact whilst turning engine by hand. A run of prob 20 mins at a bit of rev's would normally suffice to fill tappets though you would have drained tappets off by turning engine by hand and the duration engine has been left

I imagine bending a valve by turning the crank by hand would be near impossible.

Unless you were swinging on a 5 foot braker bar with 3 of your mates on the end, then I think your tappet noise is somthing else.

If it didn't do it before you touched it then chances are its something you've disturbed.

One of the manifold gaskets refitted back to front?

the top end was locked as i had the cambelt off

i also agree that it would be rare to damage a valve by hand

i'll give it another run and see what transpires

thanks

Yeah done that,

You just can't get your head around far enough to check the exhaust gaskets are the right way round, so you spend ages by touch trying feel for the exhaust port and gasket edge only for them to fall off when you reach for the manifold because the engine sits at 30°. You soon get fed up and just want the manifold back on, the result is an exhaust gasket the wrong way round covering half of the exhaust port.

A quick compression test will show up a bent valve if you want to set your mind at ease.

You can bend a valve slightly by turning the crank quite easily.

Not sure if it's 8v or Mi16 but the former doesn't have hydraulic tappets.

It was an old member's car off here, he was fitting a new head and was turning the crank with a short bar of some description using the crank bolt but it turned too far, didn't think it'd had done damage but it turned out a few of the valves were slightly bent. Not sure if they were "waisted" stems or something if that makes them weaker.

But as said above, it could be the hyrdraulic tappets on the Mi16 engine; if its a pronounced tapping noise then a good run would normally quieten them/it down.

i bent 2 valves very easily by hand on my mi16. it did not show any compression loss and ran fine. they were only slightly bent but made a horrible noise.
