Rob Thomson 6 Posted April 24, 2007 I'm commuting in the 1.6 this week. I wasn't too worried because it seems to hum down the motorway happily enough, but this evening it did something a bit odd... After 40 miles on the M5, I stopped at my local Tesco which is all of two minutes from the motorway. I was only in the shop for five minutes, but when I got back to the car the cooling fan was running which struck me as being a touch odd. Got in, started it up, and the temperature was very high, the warning light (and STOP light) was on. After a few seconds the gauge dropped and the warning lights went out, so I drove the last two miles home with the heater on and one eye permanently on the gauges. Once it had cooled down a bit I had a look under the bonnet. It hasn't lost any coolant, there's no sign of any water in the oil or anything nasty. I left it idling on the drive for ages, and the fan cut in and out with no sign of problem. Took it for a thrash and it's fine. It's always run a bit hotter than I'd like, but hasn't ever over-heated. A thorough cooling-system overhaul is on the list of things to do one day, but haven't got around to it yet. Could I be right in thinking this is just a case of heat-soak after 40 fairly quick motorway miles? And if there's localised boiling in the engine, could that push the coolant around the system enough to switch the fan in? Anyone seen this kind of thing before? Any other ideas? luggy 13 Posted April 24, 2007 Had a similar intermittant problem in my 1.9 about a year ago. Stopped in traffic and temp gauge got to the 5th bar and normally the fans kick in but it kept going up and the stop light came on. Got home did the same as yourself, turns out it was just a dodgy corroded power connection to the fan. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
