Livelee 0 Posted April 23, 2007 (edited) If some idiot kicked them over and mixed up their order before I could attach them back to the rods would this be a problem? I'm rebuilding the engine and, obviously, new bearings will be used. Cheers Dan Edited April 23, 2007 by Livelee

However if you fit each cap in turn to each rod and examine the honing marks very carefully under a good light you'll be able to see which cap has the matching marks to which rod. It's a distinctive pattern like fingerprints and always allows rod caps or main bearing caps or cam bearing caps to be identified to their correct place of origin. welshpug 1,657 Posted April 23, 2007 if its any help they will have markings on one end of the cap as well, which will help in putting them on the right way, shame they arent marked like the mains!

ALEX 98 1 Cars Posted April 24, 2007 My mate did this to his. It's pretty obvious by just running your finger over the join, there shouldn't be a step between the cap and rod. If your unlucky to get a pair that are too hard to tell by feel use pumas method.
lagonda 42 Posted April 25, 2007 Mine had different coloured blobs of paint on, which I presume was done by the factory. Lesson here is always clean & mark things like this as you take them off. As you've discovered, sod's & 205 GTi law will operate otherwise! The exterior of the castings are fairly roughly machined before the cap is separated, so you might find matching those up easier than matching honing marks.
