Mi16 Legal Advice!

Hi Guys,

 

I'm looking into buying or converting my current 205 into an S16 engined car.

 

My questions are as follows;

 

If I use a pre cat car with a post cat engine, will I need to use a cat legally? ie when it coems to MOT time will it pass?

 

Also where do i stand with getting an MOT if I don't change the log book to say 2.0 16v?

 

Any help much appreiciated.

nah you wont need a cat, the older of either engine/car is used at the base for the MOT

 

dont think log book will matter, nothing to do with road safety, could be wrong tho

You only need a cat if both the car and engine are made after the cutoff point. For emissions testing it's tested according to whichever is older.

 

As far as MOTs go I understand that technically it's an instant fail if the engine number doesn't match the official records, but 9/10 testers don't bother checking.

so if i were to put a 1994 engine into a 1990 car the test would go on engine?

 

if so would it not fail as the engine was originaly set up to run with a cat?

For emissions testing it's tested according to whichever is older.

 

as ryan says, the gti emissions will be tested, a cats not needed.

 

RE the engine swap, u HAVE to notify DVLA of the change in cc. the mot tester ive always used goes over my cars with a fine tooth comb, and hes aware when ive fitted mi16/8v turbos, ect, and never failed because of it.

A 1994 engine in a 1990 car would only be tested to 1990 emissions levels.

 

Old car + old engine = no cat

Old car + new engine = no cat

New car + old engine = no cat

New car + new engine = cat

It'll pass fine, the pre-cat emissions rules are a lot less strict

yes sorry got that the wrong way round. 94 engine in a 90 car = 90 car emissions. got it!

Isn't it funny how we refer to stuff that is newer than our 205s as 'new cars' I think of anything produced from 1995 onwards as new, and anything from 2000 onwards as down right posh

I was only talking about this with someone a few days ago. He did a double-take when I called an R-reg car 'new' and it suddenly dawned on me that it was 10 years old and not that new at all.

 

K-reg is the old/new cutoff for me, no idea why.

sorry to be a tool here. Does the cat version have the same power as the non-cat? Just the actual catalytic converter that causes the power drop?

well from what ive read before alot of people advertise there cars as pre cat cars so i assume the cat restricts power in some way,i beleive only about 10bhp maybe less. im not sure wether its how the car is set up or if its the car itself.

With the 1.9 Mi16 that had a cat it was only 148bhp compared to 160 but I think they changed some things like the compression for starters so it wasnt just the cat.
