foreigner 0 Posted April 23, 2007 the existing one is totally knackered. How do I fit new one in? Do I need press or hammer is enough? yes I did search.
Richie-Van-GTi 71 2 Cars Posted April 23, 2007 when I dont mine I hacked the old rubber section out then used a hacksaw blade to put a cut in the metal outer part so I could knock it out easily with a hammer and punch. Then just knocked a group N one in its place. A god idea is to get hold of an old mount and put the new bit into that so you can just swap it on your car, saves having the car off the road while you work

GLPoomobile 958 Posted April 23, 2007 (edited) I'm pretty damned sure that somewhere, I have a spare mount with an OE bush in it that had only covered a couple of thousand easy miles before I stripped the car. I just dunno where the hell I've put it If you want to buy it off me though I'll see if I can hunt it out. I managed to remove the bush myself but it was a real pain in the ass as I don't have a vice or worktop, and limited tools. I was doing it on the kitchen lino, holding it by hand and cutting with various hacksaw blades etc. One thing I will say, is that if you try to cut through the rubber with a hacksaw blade, smear the blade with grease. Getting a new one pressed in is nt as simple as you may think. I went to numerous places before I had any luck. Some didn't have a hydraulic press, one place (a supposed Peugeot specialist) told me they couldn't be done as the mount always cracks in the process (me thinks he's been pressing it in from the wrong side, tapered you see), and a couple of places tried but it wouldn't go in. If you can do it with just a hammer then you are damned skilled or bloody lucky Edited April 23, 2007 by GLPoomobile
sonofsam 5 Posted April 23, 2007 (edited) I put mine in with a hammer, or rather a lump hammer and a block of wood. Hydraulic press isnt needed really, a fly press would as good. Edited April 23, 2007 by sonofsam
fletch 0 Posted April 23, 2007 Much easier if you have a spare casting ,that way you don't have to get another one pressed in (by a garage usually) and you can take one out and put the other straight in.
foreigner 0 Posted April 23, 2007 Luckily I have two spare mounts if I include the one on 1.6 petrol. So I might go to the garage and ask them to press it in but first I'll try hammer as bush is only a tenner in gsf. I am not going for good one as I am sure I will blow the engine out or something like that. Old bush is gone completely so it should be easy to get out. ( I've just read it again and I am sure it will be pain)
Ahl 4 Posted April 23, 2007 IMO, if you can get it done on a press, then do it. Saves a load of hassle. I think I read somewhere about the bush/mount being tapered and it only going in easily one way. Could well be nonsense though.
Miles 331 1 Cars Posted April 23, 2007 Same old thing with the mount's, some press in without any hassle and other's are tight to say the least, Just make sure as with any pressing a good adaptor is always handy, most of mine are Pug bit's adapted to fit. Baz 421 Posted April 24, 2007 If you can't find a garage then and engineering place will more likely have a press, much easier. The guy that does all mine now has made a nice adaptor as i have quite a few done, slots them straight in!

inferno 1 Posted April 24, 2007 ive got loads of mounts spare, and a 20 ton press (bit overkill tbh) i can fix you one up when you collect your manifold if you dont need it sooner mate?

Baz 421 Posted April 24, 2007 It's basically just like a pipe that's exactly the right O.D. of the mounts, so pushes them out and presses them in nice and easily, causing minimal damage.
