Dead Diff Bearings?

Recommended Posts

pug_life

Just got back from combe action day, car made the 380mile round trip ok, engine ran fine but when turning right or vaguely pointing wheels right theres a massive juddering/shaking... I thought tracking was out or at worst a bearing loose or dud diff :D

However just got her up on stands and when the wheels face left everything rotates in harmony, but when turned right the gearbox is moving left to right with abit of up and down play ;)

I've had a search on forum but can't find anything related to this??? Would a knackered diff bearing on one side cause the gearbox, and engine to move side to side dramatically, i will try get a small video of it tomoro as its quite shocking even turning by hand....

As a side note all engine mounts and gearbox top mount are Stew Baker Group N mounts, all done up tight so that should remove that possibility....

thanks in advance.... :D

First thought for this sort of problem would be to blame the driveshafts, and then the mount on top of the gearbox...

Never checked a diff with it on the car, but at a guess, take the wheels off and stick it in neutral, then lie underneath and holdthe shafts and turn, should turn smoothly, be stiffish but easily movable by hand.

thou it turning the steerign shouldnt really affect the loading on the diff that much :S

well others have considered driveshafts but i can't see any reason for driveshaft causing gearbox to sway side to side?

gearbox top mount and battery tray are done up tight... even so if they were loose surely it would sway when turning in any direction?

The gearbox gets gears fine, nothing pops out, crunches etc etc. but i'm stumped as to why its only doing it on a right turn and happens during rotation of the wheel/driveshaft. I can't move the gearbox at all by hand.

And i didn't get a chance to pester miles yesterday as i was sunbathing, watching people stack/kill and abuse cars on track, and giving bono/anthony and the southerners banter ;)

I suspect that a driveshaft is chewing up the rollers on the u/j tripod, and only doing it on one side lock as maybe the rack isn't totally centred for tracking adjustment? This would allow the shaft to rotate eccentrically and move the gearbox. My money's on the n/s shaft if the noticeable movement is the gearbox

right driveshaft change today then

it could only be something on the rotating side as the driveshaft movement is linked to the gearbox movement.. so you reckon the inner CV joint is f***ed and the rotation is causing the inner half of shaft to rotate on an angle??

will get shaft off this morning and test a good one :)

thanks for the replies guys, and doug, i saw some 309beam abuse at quarry lol. also noticed you stall as you drove past me in the pits :P
