pugbliss 0 Posted April 20, 2007 ok so ive an oil leak, yeh yeh big deal.....no its a little bit more than that as its going all over the drive way and little missy isnt liking it. so off i went and had a look where its coming from....... oh around the rocker cover and dizzy. Mmmmmmm so off i went baought a new rocker seal and dizzy o ring, fitted them but still it leaks!!!! I cleaned all the surfaces before i put both rubber things on and everything looked fine untill i saw its still leaking from the same areas. Do i have to tighten the 3 bolt things tight??? if so just how tight cos they are already on fairly good and i dont want to damage owt if i do them up tighter. Any help appreiciated joe
welshpug 1,657 Posted April 20, 2007 have you replaced the washers under the 3 bolts? overtightening will damage these even further.
pugbliss 0 Posted April 20, 2007 sorry i should of explained a little better... the leaking oil is coming from where the rocker cover gasket meets the head. and also around the bottom of the dizzy. i have replaced both gasket for the rocker cover and o ring behind the dizzy but it still leaks

Did you use OE seals?
205Rog 0 2 Cars Posted April 20, 2007 I had exactly this problem turned out to be the Camshaft oil seal... so you could try there... also if you cambelts covered in oil your need a new one of them too... good luck

Any help appreiciated joe From memory the cam cover bolts should be torqued to 10Nm which is not very tight at all. If you over tighten them the gasket won't seal properly. lagonda 42 Posted April 20, 2007 The "brass" allen screw Grimbadger refers to is just the plating, it is steel. To access it you need to remove the distributor, then you'll see it between the distributor recess & the top mounting stud for the distributor. It could be loose or missing. The three cam cover bolts shouldn't be much more than finger tight. If they've been overtightened, the cover could have distorted, which would cause a leak. Your best start is to thorioughly clean the oil away then run the engine to see just where it's coming out, or at least narrow the field down.
steve@cornwall 100 Posted April 20, 2007 Has the middle cover bolt - with the plug lead guide- got the "double threaded" bolt in it or just a normal one like the other two? A gti I bought last year developed a major and sudden leak when fitted with the wrong one.It lost all tension and the oil just sprayed out!.
pugbliss 0 Posted April 21, 2007 Lagonda..... doyou have any pics of this screw thingy? steve@cornwall...looking from the front of car at engine on the left there is a double thread, centre is also a double thread, on the right jiust a normal bolt.

Hi, sorry too crap & getting pictures onto site. Assuming you've got a Haynes manual, early version, there's a picture on page 60, picture 32.2. Otherwise as I said, remove distributor & look into housing. You'll see the distributor drive end of the camshaft; above that is a recess where the allen bolt is or should be, & above that is the top stud for the distributor.
