ORB 227 1 Cars Posted April 19, 2007 on this poor running issue? Ok, So I start my 1.6GTi and let it run up to temp for a wee while, it runs as sweet as a nut and ticks over very well. After a while, it starts to miss a bit when you rev it up, like its got a stammer. Then, after five mins it goes away and all is well with the world again. Then, it comes back very quickly, it keeps coming and going every few mins. I have a feeling it could be one of the sensors to do with the water temp, but unsure? Whats your thoughts guys? Thanks
j_turnell 137 3 Cars Posted April 19, 2007 When was it last serviced? i'd check the condition of your plugs, leads, dizzy cap, rotor arm, could also be ignition amp or a failing coil. Try a spare ecu temp if youve got one to eliminate that aswell.
ORB 227 1 Cars Posted April 19, 2007 Cheers for the reply matey, Dizzy cap, plugs and arm are all new. The plug leads seem to be in good order, and I swapped over a coil pack when it last had issues. I only have a spare 1.9 ECU, will this do for a test? I have an Ignition amp from a 1.9 but am not sure if these are the issues? any other thoughts?
j_turnell 137 3 Cars Posted April 19, 2007 I meant a spare ecu temp sensor not the ecu itself that will be fine. Ignition amp is a possibility, 1.9 item can be used, if all ignition components seem fine and have been tested or renewed i'd buy a new ecu temp sensor, they arent expensive. cheers, James. ORB 227 1 Cars Posted April 19, 2007 i put a 'new' one on a while back, but it was a 'new' one from a 405 SRi from a wreckers yard must buy a new one Thanks
Gibbo GTI 0 Posted April 19, 2007 The plug leads may look ok but 1 or more could be 'breaking down' when everything has warmed up. Had this happen on a previous car.
Rob_the_Sparky 9 Posted April 20, 2007 ECU temp sensor rarely goes intermittant like this so I doubt it is that. My bet would be something in the ignition side of things or a wire somewhere that is pretty much broken (although they are more likely to be an ON/OFF type failure. My bet would be ignition amp as a first try as I've had a couple fail (with different symptoms each time) and they do seem to become intermittant before totally dying. Rob P.S. The heat thing also ties in with ignition amp as they perform worse when hot.
lagonda 42 Posted April 20, 2007 You say various parts are new. If this problem has occurred after fitting these, try reinstalling the old parts one at a time & see if things improve. "New" doesn't always mean "working properly". I bought a pair of brand new Delco Remy boxed condensors for my V12 & the car wouldn't start the next day. Spent half a day fiddling before trying the original pre-war ones, & yes, it started straight away. Lesson learnt!
