Upgrading M/c To The 406 One

Recommended Posts

m.i-man

Well just fitted my new 406 M/C that arrived this afternoon. All went well, or so I thought...

Topped up the fluid, pressed the pedal, and yup, not much travel. Started the engine, and the pedal hit the floor! :D

Do I assume that I now need to bleed the sytem? As soon as the engine is switched off the pedal stiffens in 2 presses!

So is it air, or do I have a problem apart from being lazy?! :)

Sounds like it needs bleeding. Don't you have to adjust something inside the servo also?

:S

All the searches and reading I've done on the change over of M/C's didn't contain anything about adjusting the servo. Got me worried now!

I do have some bits left over that came with the new m/c, 2 rubber grommits (which look like they reduce the hole for the resivoir), a cable tie (no idea why that's in the box!), and a metal pin with a slit all they way down it (I really have no idea on this part, or whether it should be used in my application!).

If you don't have a Haynes manual get one, if you do have one read it :)

I have read it, but haynes manuals should be ignored 90% of the time imo!!

But anyway, bled the system, and it's f***ed! The brakes are worse now than they ever were, the travel is stupidly long, The pedal stiffens when pressed without the engine running, but as soon as you start it, the pedal just slack!

Is there anything that could explaing this? Could the m/c be faulty? I can't see any leaks in the system. Any suggestins welcome, but I need to narrow it down quick as I have an MOT on saturday!

Cheers

I've used a litre of fluid whilst bleeding the system!! I've got good flow to all of the bleed screws, I've never had problems like this before when bleeding brakes.

With the engine running, the pedal makes a lot of noise, which would suggest air, but after going through a litre of fluid, I'd have thought this would have been enough!!

Is the M/S brand new? or a second hand one,

I have had a new M/S do the same thing mind was a pattern part not a Bosch one as the 406 ones are

It was brand new, ordered from brakes international (www.brakesint.co.uk).

Part number BMC4816. £60.08, was the one that I read to buy on here in a search result.

It came in a Brem Tech box, and has no other markings on the M/C itself, so assume it's a pattern part instead of an actual 406 Bosch one!

Could it be faulty then?

Phoned Brake international, and what a nice bloke Mark is. He's saying that it's unlikely that the M/C is faulty, it's more than likely the fact that it's been fitted to a vehicle that it was not supposed to be.

So I told him I'll send him the thing back, and expect a full refund (inc postage costs) as it's a mechanical part that is faulty and nothing to do with the way or what it has been fitted to.

So I'll order a working one from ECP.

Oh the fun.

I've got exactly the same problem as you (check my thread from a couple of weeks ago). I think they have a batch of master cylinders with the wrong part numbers on them. For me the pedal feel is exactly the same as the standard 1.9 MC. The brakes work just as they did, but the 406 MC is not doing what it should i.e. reducing the pedal travel.

Don't you have to adjust the rod or something if i remember from previous posts.......... i know a few people running 307 brakes and they didn't like the longer pedal travel and so did this or got a new m/c from a newer pug to get a similar feeling pedal

I've only read in a few posts about adjusting the actuator iirc, but I don't see why it should be adjusted, so if anybody could shine some light on this, that would be great!

I now have a new bosch M/C, I'll fit that this eve, and if I can't get it to work on that, I'll know if it's it the other 'new' 406 m/c or not. Worse comes to worse, I'll stick my old m/c on as I can put up with travel on the pedal if it means I know it'll work!

I am correct in thinking that the servo should relift the pedal without a m/c connected?

If I'm right, then it would appear to be my servo....
