Mi Box Jumping Out Of 3rd Gear - Linkage Fault ?

Recommended Posts

Turbo7379

After busting the gearbox on my 1.9 GTI rally car ( see photo in motorsports section ) I fitted the spare MI16 box I had . The box was fine in the doner 405 but now it's jumping out of 3rd gear when you lift off which led to a few hairy moments at a rallysprint on Saturday .

I'm wondering if it could be due to there being no free play in the gear linkage now that it's fully rose jointed ?

I have also fitted a semi-solid bottom engine mount at the same time , could this be the cause ?

Normski

I had the same problem with my car a few years ago and it was the L shaped linkage that's bolted onto the front sub frame. It was too stiff so as the engine rocked under braking it pulled it out of third gear. I'd have a look at that first.

Not meaning to insult your intelligence, but my Mi box ran dangerously low (read: about 40ml) on gearbox oil, and started jumping out of gear. Could you have overlooked this simple possibility?

check the bottom engine mounting, some heavy braking on track in my 405 made it pop out of gear once and I know its a bit floppy...

Thanks for the help guys .

The box is definately filled with oil & as I said , I have a semi-solid bottom mount fitted so that's not an issue .

Normski could be right . I tightened up the free play in the L linkage & left it fairly tight . Maybe it's too tight , have to check that out .

Park it facing down a hill, put it into third gear then disconnect the gear rods from the box, start it up (clutch down obviously) and get it rolling down the hill then drop the clutch and drive to see if the problem is still there.
