Loctite For Wheel Studs?

Recommended Posts

Dixon

Which type of loctite should I use for holding wheel studs in the hub?

There were 2 types in Halfords, the 271 (stud and bearing fit) and the 243 (Lock N seal).

The 271 sounded like it should be the right one, but it refers to it being permanent in the instructions and I remember reading a thread somewhere advising not to use permanent loctite.

But the Lock N seal doesnt look like it would be strong enough to hold them in.

Can anyone help shed some light or thoughts?

yea think carefully, once you use the permanent stuff you will be lucky if you ever get out again, but then again is there any need to take studs out??

personally id use the permanent as the alternative may work loose, unlikely but possible

The first one. The other one is more of a sealant than a threadlock - for sealing threaded pipe joins and stuff like that.

Even if it's the permanant stuff you can still get the studs out by locking two nuts together and using a big enough bar.

271 - I bought the 24ml bottle (exceedingly expensive ), but the 3ml tube ought to be enough.

Cheers all, that was what I was hoping. Will attack these later.

Any hints or tips before I start as they didn't come with instructions, or just wack some loctite on and wind them on in?

Thats how I did mine. I used the blue stuff (271 I think) it does come undone if you ever need to remove the stud btw.

I use loctite on my hub nuts & never had a problem. What I would say is make sure all traces of oil/grease are removed from BOTH threads (ie stud & the thread it's entering). I use swarfega on an old small toothbrush, followed by rinsing it out with a water spray & drying it off.
