Refurbed Steering Racks

Hello,

 

After my initial on a vague turn-in, i think part of the blame is on a fubar rack. There is a small amount of play on the LHS track rod.

 

Anyone attempted a refurb on a rack, surely there are only a few parts that can be changed?

 

Only other thing I was thinking of was trying a quick-rack conversion kit from West Midlands Motorsport, anyone tried these yet?

 

The 205 is getting a full suspension/steering rebuild after the Ring trip last weekend. I'm sure the vague turn-in assisted in my little collison with armco :D

I recently changed my rack because of play on the RHS, did no difference. What made difference was when I discovered that the holes in the left hub where the spindle joint sits was coned, and changed it. The rack is easy to repair if you have acces to a lathe, just make a new brass bearing and fit to the RHS, wont last long though.

 

EDIT: Your LSH is probably my RHS since I am swedish and sit on the left side.

The play is normally in the ball socket under the boot of the rack, if you push and pull the arms they should be tight and no play found, These cannot really be DIY'd so it's just as cheap to get a recon rack, A mate got one from Parto the other week and it was around £40.00 and seems fine too.

Quickrack's are normally poor quality and after speaking to Skip Brown's the other day trying to find some good one's I didn;t have any joy and was like a few other people I know just say the old P/S rack is the best way to go at the moment

I've got a GSF on mine and I hate it to the extent I'm getting a Pug one at somepoint, But they are just over £100.00 but you can tell the differance in them

Steering racks are funny things, some seem sloppy without having any discernible play in them when they're off the car.

 

I've also had a poor recon one to the point where I could see where they'd just repainted over old muck so I took it back and stuck the old one back on!!!

i just put a recon QH rack on mine for the grand sum of £25 trade it's taken all the slop out now and its stopped knocking due to the worn inner ball joints, comes with a year warrenty too.

Is that a new rack from a Pug dealer?

 

Doesn't sound too bad to me given that they last for several thousands of miles!

AB Motorsport in Leamington do a quick rack, either as a kit or complete unit (depends on whether you have a splined or tapered connection)

 

We took our old one over and Andy Baker built it for us there and then for £100.

 

Nice bunch of guys and very friendly.

Thats for a manual rack, I hate to think of the power rack price, The list price of one of those puppies on my 406 is £1000.00 (new mind) or £250.00 recon

Is it possible, or indeed is there a kit available to convert a standard pug power rack to a power quick rack? I have a quick rack and it is very good, but would be miles better if it wasn't as heavy.
