Bump Stop

Recommended Posts

GTI6BOY

Hi,

My car is lowered on shocks and springs (not sure what make, but red and yellow)

My bearings have just gone so i purchased the whole new top mount kit for both sides and had it fitted. At the same time i cut 1 ring off the bump stops as it had not been done before (which you do when lowering the car?) but now at 10 mph over a speed hump there is an almighty bang where the suspension seems to be grounding out.

Why is this happening as i would have thought if the car was always sitting on the stops then the shocks cannot compress anymore for handling which is why i chopped them?

Cheers

its happening because you have cut the bump stop, its there and that length for a reason!!!

get some new ones and the banging will stop, if you haven't knackered the shocks that is.

I would be worried if the car is always relying on the bump stops, I would check the dampers or even raise the ride hight a little

I was under the impression that when you lower your car and use standard bump stops they need to be trimed?

I have only been on a test drive so they will be fine

no they dont need trimming, tis an urban myth!

the shocks still bottom out at the same point no matter how short a spring you use.

i have just been informed that my springs might be fcuked as my car looks like its on the deck since i chopped the stops(so my car was being held up by them). they also said it should not matter ive cut them as the springs should hold the car up which they dont seem to be doing

Does this sound right?

The springs hold the car up yes but when you hit a bump and it's compressed it needs the bumpstop to stop it bottoming out.

You can cut the rears a bit but I wouldn't cut the fronts.

They may be ok, it could just be that they are designed to give a really big drop. Do you know what springs they are?

I'v got 50mm springs on the front of mine and the bumpstops have been cut down. Never had any issues with handling or any knocks or bangs. I'm running adjustable dampers aswell tho so maybe thats why

I have just measured from the floor to the wheel arch straight through the centre of the wheel and theres 20mm difference on 1 side?

Thats really not good

Check for any damaged suspension components. Have u assembled the spring top cap and associated parts correctly?

if you have a 20mm discrepancy between each side its more than likely that you have a broken spring mate.

Yeah there put together right.

There is no bounce when you push down on the wing.

The springs are intact but i can compress them with my hands very easily
