Just thought i'd add that Henry was kind enough to take me out for a spin a couple of weeks ago and it already feels like a well sorted car!

Definately made me think that i'm gonna put some 30mm springs on mine, rather than the 50mm that I think are on there at the mo. Mine's definately lost a bit of the 205 character, whereas Henry's seems to have kept it intact.... no matter how much wheelspin he decides to give it :P

haha thanks dave :P have to have a go in yours sometime.

if you can't see the pics I apologise, they are hosted on geocities which only allows a limited bandwidth so after a few views it goes ape s*** on me :(

if only i had the money miles :)

throttle bodies will grace the engine bay one day. Assuming it doesnt go pop first! fingers crossed.

Think I am going to sort a roll cage and LSD before that though.

Had a look at your project thread on psooc, having seen that engine in the metal it looks even better than the pics. Hope all goes well with it.

well the trackday at bedfore went well, the car made it there and back without any misshaps or nething falling off or breaking ;)

I did manage to snap a stud on the suspenion top mount the day before the trackday, but all was well and will be taking it off as the next job to see if I can fix or have to buy a new one.

The exhuast was sorted by DES developments, thanks guys! It sailed through the noise testing at 84db with the 4-2-1manifold. I think daveboyblack who got the same system recorded under 80db with a standard manifold! So nice and quiet, shame its not so quiet inside the car, french foil for you.

I managed to get oil surge even with my efforts to stop it: GTi-6 sump, extended pickup and a **** load of oil! I'm going to be setting up a pressure warning light before the next track day, set to around 25psi. VisaGTi gave me the idea or wiring it into a side repeater, so might have to copy you there m8 :D Can't do much else about the surge without spending alot of £££ so its just gonna have to cope, im not slowing down for nout.

The car pulled well hitting ~120mph on the limiter in 5th down the back straight, it gets there alright as well :D Was nice not having to sit on the right hand side of the track with my indicator on, especially at a very fast track like bedford.

Having it on track did highligh a few issues, namely the insane amout of wheelspin from the inside front. Obviosuly more power doesnt help this, but it was really pants, had to use 5th gear to stop it from spinning! So on this front I am going to raise up the rear for more rake and fit 23mm torsion bars. By looking at photos of the car and comments from a m8, it is squatting at the rear when cornering casuing the front to lift, it feels very understeery, rear end was being dragged everywhere, had no feel really, not unlike when it was standard suspenion. Wouldnt go sideways with LOO like it would when the rear ARB was first fitted, so whilst doing the TBs I will check to see if the rear ARB is still doing what its supposed to.

Next issue was the rear wheels locking up casuing some sideways antics, which was very fun :) but braking from high speed was a nervous afair as the car would go sideways one way everytime. Great for low speed corners though, car would point at the apex then id press the wheelspin pedal! A brake bias valve will be put into the rear line and T it off to the rear brakes.

I shall do another track day after that lot and see if it still needs a LSD :)

roll cage first though. I shall update with some photos as the work begins, wont be for a few months yet.

Just wanna express my respect for your hard work and typing. Informative and you're clearly enthusiatic about it all. The joys of the 205  .

It's also very inspiring to me and many others to pull our fingers out. My engine is ready to drop in  gulp!

im really looking foward to seeing power figures from this engine of yours, will be another thing to persude me to go 2.1L (88mm stroke instead of your nutty 92.8 or whateva! )

Easter break gave me the opportunity to do some more nuts n bolts.

With the car behaving as if something had snapped/broken/or just generally gone wrong at the rear, I followed up the hunch and pulled the 25mm ARB out.

And sure enough it had snapped in half! I was suprised even though I expected it! Some photos:

SnappedARB.JPG

SnappedARB2.JPG

New ARB is on order(thank you Neal/DES)

23mm Torsion bars on their way.

The torsion bar fitment will be delayed untill I get a feel for the car with the big fat ARB again.

Brakes are booked in for some treatment with Miles.

72 degrees thermostat has been fitted making the temps a bit more manageable.

Tomorrow the front end is coming off (again) for another tidy up, going to remove fan cowling and mount the oil cooler somewhere else allowing the rad to be moved up into its correct position but further foward to miss the Mi16 inlet manifold. Should make some more space at the cramped front end

Also been spending again and now have a GTi-6 inlet manifold courtesy of TurboSam. Idea is to eventually go for an emeral setup with gti-6 inlet/injectors. Should save some ££ over TBs and still add a little power.

Track day on 21st May at brands is the next target.

Cheers.

Henry.

What a mission but I finally made it to another trackday on what was the wetest day for some time! wed 9th july.

Having found the snapped arb which made bedford a bit boring.... I set about trying to get another. Paul from 205 parts sorted me out with a 25mm item but forgot some end plates, after many weeks searching Miles came through with the goods and I could corner again!

Previous to this Miles added a tilton brake proportioning valve along with new fluid copper lines all round and a new master cylinder. The work was as usual to a high standard, quick and at a good price. Thanks Miles :)

I have also fitted a bilet ali bottom pulley, supplied by Miles as I had the original one fail on me and its secondhand replacement was looking a bit worse for ware. Some spark plugs and 10W-50 silkolene oil later and brands was open me.

Had a little scare as 30 mins before I was set to leave the car wouldnt start! The solenoid was clicking but the engine wouldnt turn, flat battery. phew.

Got to brands with a very very wet towel in the passenger foot well which was ringed out serval times during the day. An old t-shirt plugged up rear arch rust holes as water was being flicked up into the car from the tyres. But I made it there.

The new brakes enabled me to break hard without pirouetting off the track. By the end of the evening I was trail braking into the turn which really got the nose in, mid corner the new arb hooked up and kept the car gripped allowing minimal steering lock and oversteer/understeer depending on throttle opening. The only point I was dissapointed with was on exit as the inside wheel would spin on the longer corners like clearways making it hard to accerlerate out of the bend. Considering how wet it was its not all that suprising :) But the car was a joy to drive this time round, ended up doing a 25min first session I was enjoying it so much. The 309 arb kept things civilised making turn in a little understeery, but this could be cured with the brakes and it made the car amazing at cirtees, 70mph+ in the wet it would drift round nicely :) May have affects the exit speed as well but all in all the car felt well balanced and veyr fun to drive.

pic from the day:

n518650523_3523337_2073.jpg

next up is sort the rust holes/water leaks. Investigate a whine from the cambelt side and maybe fit new tensioners/water pump as a result. Get the sump off again to extend the baffle, fit gti-6 oil pump and pump baffle + chain gaurd. Windage tray and maybe the bigger sproket/longer chain to go with it all. Oh and paint the inside as it looks horrible.

Thanks for reading my little essay if you made it to the bottom.

Despite studying hard? :) I managed to get out in the freezing cold around xmas and new years to sort the car out. Previous to this it was sent away for a rollcage and a rattle can paint job on the inside. Some rust (holes) was fixed and water leak found, although I reckon its still gonna leak massivly when it sees rain again... hmmm any guess what i have been doing in the winter garage:

http://geocities.com/noob_with_attitude/Gauges.jpg

These are all in now and the white plastic painted black. Flocked dash is back in and looking good. Gauages all wired up to the ignition switch and back lights to the headlight stalk. New revotec fan controller has been wired up to the ignition switch along with a mocal oil pressure switch, 35psi, and warning lamp. The beast ran for the first time in ages after a little coaxing and some old petrol lieing about in the garage. Everything seemed to work ok so will put the front end back tomorrow ;) fingers crossed it will all carry on working!

Tran-X plate diff is in the post but I'm not sure when I will have time to fit it.

I want the torsion bars fitted next along with some ZX trailing arms to turn up the rear grip. |--| rather than /--\ :D

Pictures to follow if I can bear the cold tomorrow.

Regards.

Henry.

I managed to bear the cold over x mas and new years and got the dash bk in with gauges and an oil pressure warning light:

Dash_Gauges.jpg

I also seperated the rear harness locations:

Cage_Harness.jpg

I spent last weekend fitting my new diff which was rewarding but hardwork. I found that it wasn't just the rib on the diff casing that needed grinding, but also a bit of gearbox casing under the 'long shaft' bearing on the diff. Only needed a mm taking off for clearance and the rib on the diff casing didnt need much at all. But I took loads off thinking why wont it turn! after about 5 attempts of grinding and fitting a quick call to Miles and I found the other area that required the attention of the dremel. Also has to wip the speed housing off to get the box back on, just couldnt get it to fit! But all is good and the car has a fresh MoT \o/

Gear box off:

Diff out:

Just waiting for monday to get tax and then I can drive the rattle beast again B)

Track day at Combe on the 3rd is the next target.

well having driven the car bk up to uni it doesn't feel right :D a bit sluggish and has not got the same go as before I'm sure. Perhaps I have left the engine standing for too long or perhaps its in my head.

Hopefully If I manage to secure a summer job It will be getting a proper ECU GTi-6 inlet and reconditions GTi-6 injectors, with a good map I can then see whats what.

Can someone please confirm some Oil Pressure readings. 4k RPM should be 4.1 bar or ~59.5psi I'm seeing 55psi on a mech gauage from 2krpm upwards and no higher. It drops to 20psi at idle (warm/hot)

Normal?

Cheers.

Henry.

Right well car still fills up with water despite being fed BS about it being fixed.

And now the engine is hesitating badly and I think onl on 3 cylinders as of tonight which could be related to the sluggish feeling previous.

Tomorrow is plugs out to check spark and do a compression test. I will also swap ignition amps as I have a spare. Then I'm all out of options without spending money! lol

Seperate thread started for help.

Cheers.

Henry.

That pressure is low, Most of mine are around 80psi when hot at that rev range or about 100psi when cold

Post up the results of the test but leaving it standing should not cause a problem, I;ve used engine's which have stood for yr's without problems

hi miles,

according the the haynes manual the spring is set for 4.1bar or ~59.5psi Its definately got the old Mi spring in there now, and does see 59psi when revving high. Anything to worry about?

Compression results in missfire/hesitation thread.

For coil, amp, dizzy and rotor from pug £260!! got to be joking.

Cheers.

How old is the oil? Old oil will show significantly lower pressure than new oil of the same spec and grade.

I changed the oil to the same 10w40 vaux semi synthetic and got 83psi cold idle compared to around 60 prior to the change. The old oil had done about 2/3 trackdays and a small amount of road use :P On another post I posted up the figures at hot idle and hot load.

The pressure you see will vary on what viscosity oil you use, the oil pump spring tension and the temperatures that the oil operates at. I need to put a decent oil temperature gauge to try and get the oil to around the optimum temperature whilst beasting it on track. The normal dash one is pretty useless, especially considering it takes its readings from the bottom of the sump.

its 10w 50 silkolene full synthetic. I think its done 1 trackday but could be 2 and very limited road mileage.

Temps are around 80 for those readings. From the sump on a racetec gauge.

I'm getting increasingly paranoid about my pressure readings. The mech guage reads about 55psi which matches the dodgey peugeot gauge as well. Had a little blast tonight and saw temps approaching 100 degrees C where even at 5000 rpm+ the pressure was still only 55psi. Iv'e got a track day coming up thats been paid for now, engine is running sweet at the moment but just getting worried about the pressure reasdings.

After the track day I will take the sump off to inspect things and put a new sping in there for good measure. Or even a new pump if its needed. But don't have time for any of this before track time B)

As long as it holds 55psi all day at the track can anyone forsee any problems?

Cheers.

Henry.

well I took the sump off on sunday to have a look at things, but all seemed fine. I made the dicision to remove the little plunger/spring locator thing that sits in the pickup as it never located properly anyway, I also fitted an XU10 spring I had lying around so I can now worry about high pressure instead :)

The inside of the oil pump was quite heavily scored where one of the rotors spins. The other side looked fine. Pressure is now 90psi cold idle and goes off the gauge with minimal revs (100psi+). I think something must have been up with the old spring/locator as it wouldn't go to the pressure the system was rated at i.e. 60psi. It will get gti-6 oil pump sprocket and chain when I next have time and money!

New problem; car wont idle, just stalls whenever I have to stop. It will just about idle if I spend 5 mins nursing the revs down before finally letting go of the throttle. I took off all the breathers and oil filler pipe which were full of mayo and blocked up, so cleaned them all out. Car now runs better and feels more pokey but still wont idle. I havn't touched anything before the problem arose. One day it was fine the next it just stalls. Any ideas?

Is this on a 1.9 Mi? Do the revs just die immediately? i.e. you let off and the revs drop as per normal but instead of stabilising around 1k it just stalls? Or does it sometimes hunt up and down really badly before stalling?

Could be ICV, worn throttle or duff AFM.
