Any Side Effects From Removing The Heater Rail?

Recommended Posts

What are the side effects from removing the heater rail on an Mi16 engine, and running the cooling system without it? No serious issues are there?

I presume you mean the metal pipe around the back of the head? If so then no, all that does is form part of the system to get the water going to your in car heater hotter a bit quicker (if you get me!). Personally i prefer the neater hose setup and cleaner looking engine bay you get without it.

That's a relief. Didn't think it'd cause any grief, but it's good to know otherwise it'd have bugged me till the end of time.

What parts am I likely to be missing from my engine bay? In fact, don't suppose anyone has a pic?- as that'd say everything I need to know...

(I might put the rail back on as I have a couple of silicone pipes for the job).

Look through the link in my sig, there are various pics dotted around in the pages and pages which have some quite nice views of how an MI engine bay should look (in my opinion obviously!).

I never run that pipe either as the engine's got enough pipes anyway so it neaten's things up slightly and less to go wrong

You will need an 8V water distribution block for the back of the engine block to replace the 16v item - the 8V only has 2 outlets instead of 3. You then need to block or weld the pipe coming from the thermostat housing.

Mine is removed - also makes working on the rear of the engine much easier :(

OK. I haven't done much work on cooling systems before, the water distribution block is where the top pipe from the heater matrix goes to on the block, is it not? -Which cannot be seen from the top of the engine due to the angle.

I'm thinking the heater rail is just a piece of metal pipe bolted to the block which fits between the thermostat and the water distribution block, between two hoses. Or is it more than just a piece of pipe?

taylorspug: I looked through your sig pics and did not see one of the rear of the block!

Spot on, you can get to the dist block from underneath when on axle stands.
