Standard 1.6 Alloys

Recommended Posts

Guest Jason1446

I'm putting a 1.9 16v engine into a 1.6 gti but what I would like to know is what is the best setup of brakes that could be put under the standard alloys and would it be good enough for mainly road use with some track days. I would like to keep the original understated look if possible.

Cheers Jason

Standard brakes are fine for road and occasional track use, thats all I have on my Mi16. Just fit some decent pads, I use Mintex 1166, bite from cold is good and I haven't had fade even on track.

Could go for 1.9 hubs then use 1.9 calipers which are a better design than the 1.6 ones.

Don't know if the 307 conversion would fit under 14's

Theres a good chance the 206 GTI setup would fit under the 14's. They're 266mm discs and the calipers should clear.

I don't think so, not the 283mm setup anyway. The 266mm ones might but I haven't checked for sure.

I've got 1.9 hubs and calipers on at mo, using stock 14" speedlines...

Clearance on the calipers is ok :D

I'd like to see if the 266mm setup fits ok, stock 1.9's are 245mm aren't they??

I know the 206gti180 setup won't fit as they were tight on 15's....

Do wilwood not do a smaller disc 4pot caliper setup??

From what I've read on this site, the 247mm setup will, a 266 mm setup will (I'll be doing this to my car soon) but for the 283mm setup you need 15" wheels. This isn't from experience though, just from reading past posts on here.

Thanks for the advice, it's just the car is going to be used in a charity run in september which will include 3 passes over 700 Feet in one day in the swiss alps so everything has to be spot on but would like to keep the 14 inch wheel for the understated look. :(

Thanks Jason

The 266mm set up fits under SOME std 14" wheels but not others. You can sort it out by grinding away some of the caliper.

Its the standard size so it certainly should do, all 205 disc's (vented or solid) have 247mm discs so they can even fit under 13" wheels.

Another option is get 15 inch wheels that have the same look as the standard 14's. This car is going to be turned into a weekend car and possible track day machine  so I'm just looking at all the options before spending the cash..

sorry for my ignorance, but I've read contradiction information and I feel starting a new post would be wasteful - will the 1.9 calipers + discs attach on lesser model hubs, as in one or two posts people say they will, and in others they say that you need the 1.9 hubs?

I was always led to believe that 1.9 calipers do fit 1.6 hubs but you will need to retain 1.6 discs.

as a word of warning, my 1.9 calipers fit under my pepperpot wheels however, the drivers side has "clipped" the inside of the wheel slightly and left a minute groove. Detected by a rather nasty grinding on motorway ;)

Oh forgot to say (thought I had but must have been another thread) that I run 14s on the rallycar and my roadcar.

They both have 1.9 hubs and calipers and all of them needed grinding back on the few sets of rims I have.

We ground back the caliper lip on the rallycar then put a different set of pepperpots on only to find it needed more taken off.

The 1.9 brakes will fit the base model hubs but the 1.6 Alloys are likely to catch, SMR's are worse than Speedlines for catching the calipers.
