Black Grease Around My Hubs

Recommended Posts

GLPoomobile

Just been out fitting new front disks and pads and discovered loads of black grease all over the place.

On the drivers side it is on the driveshaft, calliper, wishbone, hub and right up the top of the wheel arch. I immediately thought I must have a split on the outer CV boot but it's fine. No splits and still firmly in place.

It's the same on the passenger side but not quite as much grease, and again the CV boots are fine.

Where would this have come from?

cv joints where a previous owner/garage have replaced a boot but not cleaned up? or the inner joint.

Nope.

I replaced loads of stuff up the front last year and there was no signs of any grease then.

Since then the only thing that has been done is getting the tracking sorted.

That crossed my mind too, but I'm fairly certain it's black grease rather than s*ite  And it does seem as though it has come from the outer CV joints, but I can find absolutely no trace of a problem to prove this.

I can't see it being anything other than the outer CV. But, have you checked the wishbone ball joint?

Are you thinking a split boot?

Balljoint boots look to be OK, but there is far too much grease to have come from there even if they had split!

The only thing I can think of doing is cleaning it all up and having another look when I get back from devon at the weekend.

Shock is not leaking is it? no idea what the fluid out of one of those would look like anyway, but worth a look?

It looked like engine or gearbox oil when mine leaked, but it doesn't spread far so I would doubt it was that anyway.

I agree that it is the CV joint(s), my last 205 did the same thing a couple of years ago and I couldn't find a hole in the boot until it split. I even had a garage look at it before it split and they couldn't find a hole either.
