CaM 0 Posted April 11, 2007 (edited) ok. probably should have searched but.... Am I correct in assuming that if a 405SRi has had a be3 - be1 swap, or vice versa, that the reason it wont grab 5th or reverse positions is because the linkage/shifter setup needs to be swapped to the relevant gearbox style? A mint example has come up for pittance which, form the writing in the advertisement, sounds to have had the 'other' type of gearbox fitted to what was originally in it..... cheers in advance Cam Edited April 11, 2007 by CaM
CaM 0 Posted April 11, 2007 ALSO, If it;'s still got a be3 in it... is this jsut a matter of adjusting shift linkages, either on the side of the box, or the link rods? cheers
Richie-Van-GTi 71 2 Cars Posted April 11, 2007 be1 and be3 boxes use the same linkages (gti boxes anyway). Unless they put a be1 into a be3 in which case they wont have the lift up cable fitted so cannot get reverse for that reason.
CaM 0 Posted April 11, 2007 COOL, thanks. are the shift rods on the side of the box adjustable? If it's not getting top gear also, i figure they may be maladjusted?
pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted April 11, 2007 Did you swap the selector arm for a 205 one instead of the 405 one before you fitted it? If you did its possible that the selector fork has dropped so you can't select all the gears. If not this might be why. A common occurance. Miles has previously posted how to fix this, the box needn't come fully apart iirc. Graham.
CaM 0 Posted April 12, 2007 'tis in a car (405) I'm looking at buying so no idea what box is in it yet. just getting some background on what i thought may be the issue...... The current owners had the current box installed which is alledgedly form a 405. Am viewing the car tomorrow night so will know more on what the story is then... went past in my lunchbreak (house has a men gravel road leading to it... how could I resist) and it looks pretty mint to me so will likely buy it anyway. even if i need to source another gearbox
pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted April 12, 2007 OK, I mis-understood your original post (didn't read it properly) thinking it was already in a 205. Depending on what gearbox is fitted if its a Be1 in a Be3 you should be able to get all gears OK but there will be no lockout for reverse if it should have a Be3. It is possible that the replacement box is wrong, if the breakers in NZ are anything like the ones here in the UK. Some will sell you any gearbox from a Peugeot & insist its the one you need. AFAIK the later Be3 (fitted to the 306 Dturbo) are quite well known for loosing fifth gear but not sure about reverse as well. Its an easy fix when this happens, only th gearbox end cover needs to come off but not sure exactly what is done to fix it. That doesn't explain reverse though. Best wait until you've seen the car though. Graham.
CaM 0 Posted April 13, 2007 saw and bought tonight for the princely sum of $200 NZ. no rust, slightly crap paint on boot, possibly on roof too... owner has been pedantic about it's maintenance for 12 years was sad to see it go lol. AFAIK it'll be one of the linkages on the side of the box. IIRC when I could only get a 405 box for my 205, I had to change one of them, and noticed that it slipped when removing form 205 box, so took end cover off and held fork when doing new box. I expect this too has happened. looked at it in reasonably low light conditions so couldn't really confirm whether be1 or be3 box in it, but the shifter bottoms out on the RHS of the console when in 3rd/4th gear positions. should be an easy fix cheers for all your help
