Potential Driveshaft Issue

Recommended Posts

Guest jameswalton

hey, as the title says I think I've got an issue with my near-side driveshaft

I've noticed this morning that theres quite a big patch of oily solution coating the inside of my wheelarch and the inner wheel. On closer inspection I *think* the gaiter around the where the driveshaft meets the hub has come off the end, I'm not particularly technical but does this sound like a reasonable explanation?

I've got to go back up North tomorrow and I don't really want to drive it if it will be dangerous like this....if its not such a big deal I can get it sorted when I'm home

Could anyone shed any light on what it potentially could be or if I'm on the right track?

Cheers

James

Sounds to me like you have the problem exactly right. Split CV gaitor & the grease from the CV joint has sprayed out over the inside of your wheel & wheel arch.

My car seems to do the driverside outer one every trackday. :)

Not great but how far North are you driving with it? I wouldn't drive it to far, especially not on the motorway. I did once & it cost me a new driveshaft as the squealing from it got louder as I slowed down on the slip road.:)

Cheap to fix with an AMK strecthy boot kit (appriox £7) & no need to take the driveshaft out if you have access to a stretching cone.

Cheers mate, I'm taking it from Oxford to Sheffield so its a fair way

It looks like it has just come off the end, is there any chance I can put it back on or is it too far gone for that?

I dont have access to any of the things you mentioned Im afraid, if anyone would be willing to help I'd be very grateful

If it's just come off the end, you can pop it back on & us a plastic zip tie to secure it. Best replace some of the grease you've lost first though. You should be able to get a sachet of CV grease from a motor factor.

Bear in mind that if it's been like that for a while then the wear may have set in.

It's quicker to replace the complete driveshaft than to piss about with stretchy boots!

thanks for the replies guys....

i know that it had only been like that for one day, and the driveshaft was pretty new... i put a zip tie around the end as it had just come off the hub end, so im hoping that will be the end of it

if not, how much am i looking at for a new driveshaft?

If the driveshaft was pretty new it should have at least a 3 month warrenty, have you got the receipts for it if its less than that?

if not, how much am i looking at for a new driveshaft?

Usually around £60 afaik for a qulaity GKN one from GSF. (Not just a cheap recon one).

Was it a reconditioned one?

I've had one that was a recon unit a couple of months ago, and its never seemed right, and recently its started making odd noises, tbh recon ones seem to be a bag of s*ite, i had one from GSF on my AX, that lasted 2 years before it developed a serious knock and this one i have now, isn't even straight
