Suspension Question...

A few procedural questions for the people who have done this before, and my way of thinking.

 

I am thinking of removing the 3 11mm bolts on the top, remove droplink, unbolt the hub carrier and then the strut drops out. (ok, won't be as straightforward as that but you get my drift, will probably be minus some skin and fingers by the end)

 

Now my questions:

 

1)Am I guaranteed that the driveshaft will fall out of the box in the process, ie, do I need to empty the gearbox oil before I start?

 

2)Will I need to remove the hub nut? (ease of access, any other reason?)

 

Anything I missed, feel free to let me know!

1. The obvious, jack up remove wheel, axel stand.

2. Remove droplink, generally 16-17mm socket and a spanner.

3. Undo strut/hub pinch bolt (16-17mm)

4. Twist hub round to access the back, tap in a sump plug remover or other 8mm allen key and twist 45 degrees opening the hub. Chisel etc can also be used.

5. Tap with hammer and it should slide out.

6. Remove 3 11mm bolts on strut top and remove.

 

You only need to worry about the driveshaft on the passenger side as this hasn't got an intermediate bearing holding it in. If you take care when knocking the strut off so that the hub doesnt fall forward it should be fine. I usually push the wheel up against it to prevent this. Dont need to touch the hub nut.

i support the hubs on both sides, you always have the chance you'll separate teh CVs otherwise

Cheers Tom. I have 3 jacks and plenty of axle stands so will be making full use of them.
