What is the sensor in the sump for???

 

I run a 16 valve engine and yesterday came across a sensor bolted in to the sump with a wire coming from it, going in to the multiplug. The wire (white wire) has been left dangling around the driveshaft by the engine installer guy, and so now needs replacing, but it would be good to know what this sensor senses!
