Guest edcotic Posted April 9, 2007 so i got my crank back from the machine shop to be told that it need +8 on the big ends and +3 on the mains +8 sounds like a hell of a lot to me and i'm concerned for the condition of the rod i was really hoping not to have to take the head off ( the engine is still in the car) should i risk it and put the crank back on and see what happens? or can the rod be assessed with it still in the bore? many thanks Ed
Mikey G 3 Posted April 9, 2007 What was the initial problem with the engine that required a crank regrind? If it spun a bearing then yes i would say the conrod(s) need to be checked out of the car. If it was just badly worn then you should be ok.

ALEX 98 1 Cars Posted April 10, 2007 (edited) +8 Means 0.8mm thicker than standard bearings. It just means that the crank can't be ground again in the future. I'd get the macine shop to check the rods if your unsure about their condition. There is usually some discolouration on the bearing seats if they're knakered, The machine shop will be able to measure them for out of round for you though. Kitch 4 Posted April 14, 2007 When I had my crank reground, they did all of them at +3, which was the "highest allowable tolerance the manufactuer has specified." In other words, they were saying thats as much as you can do it, so I'd approach with caution there mate.

benlilly 0 Posted April 17, 2007 Check if the machine shop is talking inches or mm. They might have meant 8 thousands of an inch.
