Oil Leaks...where From

Recommended Posts

hey all, got an oil leak some where on the engine but not sure where.... it drips from the sump but the top of the sump is totaly soaked. the gear box too is soaked but i dont think its from there as the oil doesnt smell much. ive tried tracing the leak but the enigine has quite a few damp spots which im finding hard to dry up.

what/where are the most common leak areas so i can check them first and renew any gaskets, on the subject of gaskets where is the best/cheapest place to get them??

If the gearbox is covered in oil, it is quite likely it is leaking from the distributor itself, or the distributor to head o - ring.

Also, the crank seal behind the flywheel could be leaking. And check the rocker cover gasket too.

Try Neat Autos for the gaskets.

Neat Autos website best to phone them though as the website states the catalogue has been suspended.

You have a good source of spares though in Bradford, Wida components. They used to supply a lot of the stuff to Autofive.

Persdonally I wouldn't suspect the crank seal for a wet sump & definately not for a wet gearbox. Like Saveloy says though, the dizzy seal is a common leak point along with the rocker cover & sometimes the dipstick tube. A leaking crank seal would be dripping from under the car from the gearbox to engine join & possibily high lighted by a slipping clutch.

Is it a 1.6 or a 1.9 ?

I had a oil leak on my 1.6 along the back of the sump and tried a flat edge on about 5 different sumps before i found a good one. It seems to be a bad casting problem on 1.6 sumps all the 1.9 sumps were o.k
