Rattle Rattle Rattle?

Recommended Posts

I'm getting a rattle that seems to becoming from the offside where the driveshaft meets the engine. At least i think thats where its coming from. When i look under the car Im able to move the driveshaft a little bit making it rattle. I'm no mechanic, but that sounds bad to me.

I don't know exactly what parts could be the problem, i don't really understand what the driveshaft connects too. After searching the forum I'm thinking the rattling could be down to missing clips, or is it a case of replacing bearings? any idea what a garages would charge?

Any help would be great, thanks ;)

There is a bearing that sits near the lower engine mount. I would check the retaining bolts are in place first, they pull through the mount and hold the bearing inside.

Thanks Mickey G. So it cold be down to two or three things perhaps. Either clips, bearings or retaining bolts.

After another look it seems that there is a lot of oil around the boot but the boot is intact. The boot is held in place by tie wraps!!? is that the usual supply with new boots?. I'm guessing that the boot split at some point and was replaced, but damage may have occurred before it was fixed. What sort of damage could that be i wonder. If i was to get a new boot it won't fix anything. If it is bearings or retaining bolts, i guess just buying a new driveshaft won't fix anything either.

I think the only option is to pull out the driveshaft and check the bearings and retaining bolts (not that i know what i'm looking at\for) Unless anyone else has any ideas.

Cable ties on a boot is quite common and ok as long as they are done correctly and are of a decent thickness to get them tight. Maybe if it was done before as you say the shaft may be low on grease and is wearing. Normally the outer CV joint is prone to this more as it does more work than the inner joint.

The retaining bolts will be visible on the other side of the mount, they will need to be undone all the way and twisted around 180 degrees to allow the bearing and shaft to come free. Dont forget to get something to catch the gearbox oil if you do remove it.
