Starter Solenoid Wiring

Recommended Posts

From searching around on the site i have found that its the solenoid wiring thats giving me my starting problems, for now i have wired a switch in so it will start but id like top do it properly, i know the problem is one of the connections inside the car, can anyone tell me what conections i should be checking? im thinking it could also be the ignition barrel or possiblily the immobilser, can anyone give me any info for ruling out these possiblities? thanks in advance ;)

Whilst this wasn't the problem with mine starting (or not), I've heard the brown multi-plugs under the steering column (the one with 6 pins IIRC) can be the main cause of the solenoid doing erratic things or nothing at all. Check there first.

Agree totally with Dr Sarty. The terminals on the brown multiplug on my car were green with verdigris, & some were partially eaten away. This is something that lives in a dry, indeed warm, environment under the AFM so how it gets like that, goodness knows. Meanwhile, earthing blocks with identical terminals in a far more exposed position remain bright & shiny. Weird.

I solved mine by cutting the multiplug off & soldering on a couple of multiplugs from an old Fiat 126 loom I fortunately still had. Even that wasn't easy because Peugeot bean counters have saved micro-pence per 205 by using wiring of far too thin a gauge ... doubtless fine 15 years ago, but the result is it appears to slowly oxidise, or burn, even, meaning when you strip the insulation back & expect bright copper, you find black wire.

Its not usually the brown multiplugs under the dash that are the problem but the one in the engine bay imo.

When I had starter problems last year I replaced the wire from the engine bay brown plug to the solenoid & its been fine ever since. :(

Do you have an immobiliser?

I had to fix a starting problem (on a members car here as a matter of fact) where there was not enough current getting to the starter motor through the immobiliser circuit, possibly due to the small wiring or circuitry involved in the unit itself, once bypassed the car started perfectly.
