right i need some quick answers, my car is on axle stands cos i'm changing the front suspension, the problem is i cant get the hub carrier (?) to release the bopttom of the strut, ive tried levering it, ahmmering it and all sorts, im just off to halfrauds to get some spring compressors as i didnt think of that beforehand, would that make it a little easier to get out? or is there something else that would help

id be very gratefull for some quick answers

thanks

john

I hammer the flat bit of a 306 jack handle (205 is probably the same?) down the carrier - then twist it to crack the seal.

put an 8mm square oil sump plug socket into the gap where the bolt is on the hub then turn it and the strut will be freed.

8mm Allen Key might also work if you're lucky. It shouldn't take much to break that 'seal'.

I'll second the sump plug key trick, but add some plusgas or WD40 around the edge, then lever away so the gap opens and closes to work the lubricant down into the joint and eventually you should be able to bash the hub down off the strut.

And I know WD40 isn't a lubricant before some smarty pants pulls me up on that comment, but it works and that's all that matters.

right well after bashing kicking and almost relieving myself of and index finger i have managed to break the seal on the drivers side with the sump plug idea but it still isnt moving for s*ite ive tried hammering the hub carrier downwards, jumping on the wheel etc etc and as for the passenger side, theres a lot less room to manouvre under there and i still cant break the seal

time for some scran methinks

keep the ideas coming in pleeaassee

right ive now run out of ideas so ive left some lube to soak in overnight, i have now come across a new and extremely annoying problem tho, i havent had the wheels off since i had the new tyre put on and it turns out that the bolts have been done up soo stupidly tight that it took two of us to remove the 3 normal bolts but when it came to the locking bolt (one of the ones where pins fit into holes in the bolt) one of the pins on the key sheared off and two of them bent rendering it useless and i now cant get any of my wheels off cos i only had one key, the only marking on it is AFKQ if this means anything to anybody or if someone has one it would be greatly appreciated

Yep I've been through that, and is was a proper c*nt @ the time, had to get my mate

from over the road round with his 12V windy gun to shift it, we tryed everything..shims, jacks, levers, bolts back in and strops etc,.the gun was the only way out!

Make sure you take the locking bolt out first - tighten the others up in sequence then undo the locking bolt and should come out easily.

If you still struggle - ensure the other bolts are tight and hammer a socket over the top then undo. Again should be easy enough to remove.

Might be worth removing the hub carrier from the wishbone (although you might have some more issues removing it by the sounds of things) then getting it all in a vice for some more manipulating

there is only one tool for this. a big copper mallet. you can hit so hard and not damage it.

If you are already using a big copper mallet then there is only one other tool - blowtorch!

as regards to the beating a socket on the locking nut, that wont work cos its one of the ones where the pins on the key slot into little holes on the nut and so doesnt have much in the way of surface to beat it onto

I did this yesterday and we opened that bit up with a chisel... Be careful though - as soon as the passengers side comes out the driveshaft will pull out of the box and make a mess.
