Alan_M 66 1 Cars Posted April 4, 2007 I have 1 day left to sort this problem, as I am off to the 'Ring on Thursday morning. My 205 had a vague turn-in to the left, highllighted a few weeks ago which I figured was the intermediate joint due to zilch play in the rack. Changed that for a new ECP one, along with new wishbones/polybushes and TRE's. The tracking has'nt been properly setup yet, just using the naked eye but its not far off. After changing all that lot, I swopped over to another PAS rack that my passenger for the trip, Alistair got for me. That swopped the vagueness to the right!?! Put the original rack back on and now its still on the right, and inconsistent. What can it be? This has even got Anthony baffled
pugrallye 0 Posted April 4, 2007 so you have new track rod ends, wishbones and track rods on both sides?
Alan_M 66 1 Cars Posted April 4, 2007 Yes, new TRE's and wishbones but not track rods. I could'nt feel any play. I'm actually half tempted to throw on the old wishbones which had rogered balljoints, but did'nt do this.
Alastairh 47 Posted April 4, 2007 Id be tempted to Triple check all the bolts are super tight, and get the tracking done, as that can be miss leading. What about these blank off pipes on the pas rack? Alastair
smckeown 1 Posted April 4, 2007 i'd get the tracking checked properly
pugrallye 0 Posted April 4, 2007 it is quite possibly a tracking issue, with messing about with the ends, you may just have one wheel with more toe than t'other, causing turn in issue
Alan_M 66 1 Cars Posted April 4, 2007 I did most of them yesterday, subframe bolts etc but will check the balljoint bolts in a minute. As for the PAS pipe holes, we left them open on the original rack when the car was built and it was spot-on then. Typical is'nt it
Alan_M 66 1 Cars Posted April 4, 2007 I personaly don't think its to with the rack now...... there is no play in it when wiggling the wheels. Due to its inconsistency, I think its more likely to be a loose bolt. Thats exactly what it feels like. Can somebody tell me what effect tightening the wishbone bolts up without the cars weight on them has?
Alastairh 47 Posted April 4, 2007 These poly bushes in the wish bones. I know one is bigger than the other, but can you fit them back to front if you get me? Alastair
Sandy 191 Posted April 4, 2007 Can somebody tell me what effect tightening the wishbone bolts up without the cars weight on them has? It allows the bushes to be relaxed at the normal ride height. If you tighten them at full droop then drop the car back on the floor, they're twisted/pre-loaded.
Alan_M 66 1 Cars Posted April 4, 2007 These poly bushes in the wish bones. I know one is bigger than the other, but can you fit them back to front if you get me? Alastair No, there is a land for the bush face on each outer end of the wishbone, the inside is rounded. Sod knows what it is, I have just been out to tighten everything and it still seems vague, except its to the right now. I did fiddle with the right side TRE this time, so maybe taking it to get tracking sorted will solve the issue.
C_W 3 1 Cars Posted April 4, 2007 i'd get the tracking checked properly Me too. Getting the tracking checked and making sure the track rods are evenly adjusted usually makes it feel better. I personaly don't think its to with the rack now...... there is no play in it when wiggling the wheels. Due to its inconsistency, I think its more likely to be a loose bolt. Thats exactly what it feels like. Can somebody tell me what effect tightening the wishbone bolts up without the cars weight on them has? Not much in my experience - I know you're supposed to tighten them on the ground but when I've done it this way the bushes lasted no longer than when tightened up with the car in the air. If it was a loose bolt it would be knocking I reckon, paricularly when setting off and braking.
jackherer 543 Posted April 4, 2007 I figured was the intermediate joint due to zilch play in the rack. Changed that for a new ECP one Do you mean the lower steerig column? Did the one you got have a rubber bush in it? http://forum.205gtidrivers.com/index.php?s...c=73088&hl=
kyepan 291 Posted April 4, 2007 Other things to check. Tyre pressures all round, can cause well dodgy steering feel.
Alan_M 66 1 Cars Posted April 4, 2007 Got the tracking done, apparently the right side was way out. Got them to set the wheels to zero toe-in and it does feel better but nowhere like it used too. I'm leaving as it is for now, too late anyway as we're off at 5am tomorrow. When I come back, I'm going to do a strip down of the suspension and steering and rebuild it all, probably with a proper quick-rack ready for another possible jaunt to the 'Ring in June. Thanks guys
smckeown 1 Posted April 4, 2007 Glad you got it sorted in time. Nothing worse than the pressure of a last minute issue that could ruin a track day. I did think when you said you set or verified the tracking by eye that you were insane I once had one side out by 4 degrees and it looked fine. But steering was rather dull indeed
