Radial Vs. Lug Mount Calipers...

Hi again,

 

could someone please explain to me the difference between a radial mounted and a lug mounted caliper? Am I right in thinking that the 205 Gti is a radial mounted caliper? And does this mean that any radial mounted caliper will fit the 205 Gti [assuming there's enough wheel clearance of course]

me thinks a radial mounted caliper is bolted through from the 'top' of the caliper, (as on a lot of newer bikes) and the 205 GTI is normal lig mounted.Get it? thats a pretty poor description, but its hard to put into words (for me anyway!!) ;)

Yep, basically a radial mount caliper has the mounting bolts going through the top of the caliper and run parallel to the disc - which results in a stiffer structure than lug mount calipers (as found on the 205)

Thanks for explaining the difference. As the 205 is a lug mount caliper, does that then mean any lug mount caliper will fit, providing the wheels are big enough?

depends on the lug spacings. you can make brackets to convert from lug to radial mounted calipers. as long as youve got the room you can do anything really.

If you're doing your own brake conversion and making brackets, it's easier to build adjustment into a radial mount setup than a lug, which is nice.

 

Also, you can easily space radial mount calipers out to accept bigger diameter discs, which also is nice :D

And you can run them the other way up, for fitment to sets of very special brakes :D

Does anyone know an outfit that can do this so I can improve my braking within 15" wheels. At the moment I'm running Alcon 4 pots & discs and but they're only 262 in diameter and my concern is, when looking at the calipers that I won't be able to sqeeze much bigger discs with those calipers under my wheels. So I'm wanting to explore all opportunities.
