Broken Bleed Screw

Recommended Posts

Ritmo

I have just fitted a new radiator to my gti and was running the car to temp to check for water leaks and making sure the fans came on.

I bled the hose that goes to the heater matrix and when I tried to bleed the other screw that is located near the last spark plug under the ht rail it snapped off  and now the water is pouring out!!!

Has anyone had this problem and how can this be fixed.

any advice would be welcome.

done this myself last week

get a bit of hose the right size, put a bolt thats a snug fit one end and pit a jubilee clip on it, then put the other end on the bleed pipe and again jubilee clip it... tempory fix but as usual mine will prolly stay there like it for a while

Hi !

Had the same problem , i took thermostat housting out and weld that hole completly from outside , or you can try with "epoxy metal" filler :) ..me thinks that this bleed screw isn't necessery because you have bleed screw on even higher place on the pipe which goes to heater matrix ... i bled cooling system always and onley on that screw never use the one on thermostat housting and never had problem ...

Cheers

You're right. It is not necessary to use this bleed screw at all so long as you have a bleed nipple on the heater hose. I have never tried to open the head bleed screw as it just looks so delicate and you just know..

Much better are the early XUD and late XU10J2 head bleeds that use brass Allen studs on brass tubes as bleeders. I wonder if the XU10J2 arrangment can be fitted to a GTi head. No worries at all then.

thanks for the advice I think the quick fix with a small section of pipe is in order untill I have time to replace the thermostat housing.
