Injection Issues

Recommended Posts

Hi everybody, i've been driving my 1.6 gti for a few days now and trying to figure out whats wrong with the injection system. I no the gti's are bad for idling, but my one will not idle for the first 20 seconds, after that the idle raises to around 2000rpm, and will generally stay like this for the majority of the journey. However, the car goes through phases of the idle bouncing from 1200 up to 2000, and then it will begin to die. When its running it seems to pull very hard right up to the limiter, and is good to drive, without any smoke. the oil pressure stays at around half, and the car doesn't seem to get especially hot, even after sitting in traffic. The other issue is that the car is running very rich, with a real smell of fuel from the back, and really awful fuel consumption (10 quid for 40 town miles?) I have checked the circuitry on the AFM and this seems clean and the wear on the resistor strip does not seem bad. it appears the vehicle has had its throttle initial position changed at some point in its life as the anti tamper clip is missing. i can't see any vacuum leaks anywhere on the car, although i shall check the SAD today. Besides that, does anybody have any ideas? the car is an 89 F reg with 127k on the clock so maybe im expecting too much for a decent idle? thanx

If, after giving the whole inlet tract a real good clean out, especially breather pipes, AFM interior and the throttle body, the problem remains then there are two main suspects left.

One is the Coolant Temperature Sensor, the blue sensor on the side of the SAD housing and the other is the AFM itself. Do check for proper functioning of the SAD first though and give it a good clean.

My money is on the AFM. It'll most likely need recalibrating as well as a retrack. The former is not an easy DIY job and really emissions equipment and a rolling road is needed. the latter is easy enough to do.

Use the search function to find the full story on everything, there have been countless previous posts on these very common problems.
