What Cars Have The Same Engine As An S16?

Recommended Posts

david932

im looking for some s16 rods and pistons but am having trouble sourcing them.

my questions are:

1. is there a difference in the bottom end spec between the 135bhp s16 and the 155bhp s16

2. what other models share the same engine?

3. or better still what models share the same bottom end?

thanks

there was never a 135 bhp S16.

as for rods and pistons they'll be the same as an Mi16.

bottom end is quite similar to the older 8v 2.0, and not that dissimilar to the 1.9 and later engines (bar the EW)

Rods are unique to the s16, rods are a different length (shorter) to the 1.9's, the 8v xsi uses the same length rod but you'll have to get it bushed as it's the old press fit gugeon pin

135 bhp was the XSi engine. Mi16 was 1.9 or 2.0, the latter being the same as the S16, different bore and stroke aswell as block on both engines so no parts interchangeable (for standard anyway). 8v has different pistons to 16v. Not sure if the 135 has different rods or pistons to 155 as ive never looked it up.

So in summary the S16 and later 2 litre Mi16 are the same engine. Not sure if it ended up in later cars.

the only cars the 2.0 iron block mi16/s16 came in was the ZX16v (mid 92) 405, 306, Xantia VSX, and very rarely, the XM VSX.

135 BHP XSi is the later 2.0 16v XU10J4R which shares many similarities to the XU10J4RS/GTi6 engine.

Forgot about the Citroens (and i own one  )

ZX was the 155 bhp motor but the Xantia VSX was the 135 bhp motor or some had the 150bhp turbo (as in my Activa). And it seems the same situation with the XM, why fit 2 types of motor that make similar output? The turbo was used as an inbetween for the 135 bhp 16v and the V6 engine.

The Xantia with the S16 engine was available for a very short time before the XU10J4R engine

The ZX 16v was listed as 150bhp at the end of 93 but then went back to 155, no idea why as the 405/306 were only ever listed as 155

1995 306 brochures show the S16 as 150bhp, not sure what caused the 5bhp drop but I think I heard once it was related to emissions requirements for cars from around '95 onwards.

Citroen-wise:

The ZX 16v had the S16 engine, apart from the Dakar models which had the GTi-6 lump. It was 155bhp to begin with, and dropped to 150bhp when a cat was specced in '93. There is a 152bhp version with a different map too, though it was never officially recognised.

The early Xantia VSX 16v also had the 150bhp version of this engine fitted until 1995, when it was changed for the 135bhp unit when the Turbo CT became available and the 1.8 16v's were launched.

The XM never had this engine. It only had the 135bhp 16v unit and the 8v turbo CT unit. Or of course the 2.0 8v N/A unit.

No way, S16 rods are same length as T16 which is 152mm centre-centre.

Anyone know if the S16 got 23mm or 22mm small ends?

1.9 Mi16 rods are 143mm centre-centre, remember the steel block is like 15mm taller than the alloy.
