Jimmy Jazz 0 Posted March 28, 2007 Hello, My car desperately needs a new water pump... At the mo I am tipping radweld in... Not a good idea but works a treat... Anyway, due to the cambelt being involved I thought that it would be best to get someone else to do it... My fuel relay recnetly went while I was in Bath so got a tow to a local garage and they sorted it for me... Job done. Seemed like good enough chaps.. Went back up for a quote and he reckoned about 200 squid for pump and csmbelt change inc labour and VAT... seemed ok to me. Any good??? I could do it cheaper i.e. - labour but is it as risky as the mechanic thinks??? James
richsmells 2 Posted March 28, 2007 It's not a really hard job and there's plenty of information on here and in the Haynes on how to do it. Have a search. I wouldn't say that's a bad quote though.
Miles 331 1 Cars Posted March 28, 2007 Thats quite allot as it doesn't take long at all, Std charge for a belt is £80.00 and pump's are about £20.00 plus the tensioner is a good idea too
taylorspug 7 Posted March 28, 2007 I was thinking the same as Miles really. Bit too pricey...
jonnie205 1 Posted March 29, 2007 I wouldnt say that was too bad to supply and fit inc vat and labour etc
Alastairh 47 Posted March 29, 2007 As Rich says its really not that hard if you have a socket set. You can do it in an evening !
Andrwn8304 0 Posted March 29, 2007 £200 Their night job must be comedians. Its not a hard to job to your half way there when you change the timing belt, just make sure the timing marks are set up when you change the belt clean the block where the water pump meets the block so its spotless ( A very small amount of grease helps to keep the water pump gasket place) bolt them up and job done. Haynes covers the timing belt extensively in the manual if you get really stuck
jshep205gti 3 Posted March 29, 2007 IMO, £200 is a very good price for drive in/drive out. Ask a couple of other garages for comparison.
Miles 331 1 Cars Posted March 29, 2007 Belt £10.00, Tensioner £29.00, Pump £12.00, (£51.00, Neat auto prices) and it's a couple of hr's for the belt change
Grim.Badger 15 Posted March 30, 2007 Belt £10.00, Tensioner £29.00, Pump £12.00, (£51.00, Neat auto prices) and it's a couple of hr's for the belt change After comparing the impellor on my old pump with a GSF one I wouldn't touch cheap ones with a barge pole. I know £50ish seems a lot more than £12ish but seeing as it's a crucial part of a good running engine I wouldn't risk it. My old water pump was fitted by the last owner when they blew the HG and was a cheap one; the car would overheat much more easily in traffic than with the new pump. The engine also seems to heat up a bit faster with the new pump so I presume its shifting the coolant more effectively so heat is transfered from the engine better. I can post up a picture is anyone is interested, although I don't have a picture of the new one.
Alastairh 47 Posted March 30, 2007 You sure thats not got something to do with the thermostat? If your going to do it, my best advice is to go to Halfords and buy a 10+11mm ratchet spanner. You never know, till you try! Alastair

Dan@bar 0 Posted March 30, 2007 £200 for cambelt and pump seems ok compared to the quote I got for my newly aquired 1.9. I asked for a price for a cambelt, then got £140 for the belt, £180 for the belt and tensioner, and £240 for belt, tensioner, and pump. I could do it myself for the cost of parts and my own labour but f*@k that!!!

It is sometimes nice to drive in, do nothing and drive out but then it can be satisfying i suppose and 200 squid is quite nice... Some new speedlines perhaps...
