Hi !

Please can somebody explane me how can i retense (adjust) springs in distributor ? or is it necessary to replace them ?

The reason why i'm asking this is because i have heard that 1.6 and 1.9 XU engines tend to lose power from bad springs or losen tension of springs in distributor or sometnihg like that ..

Thanks !

Damir

It's a very technical thing to do DIY in my opinion.

To do it properly you have to find out what advance settings the distributor is running at a given rpm, then what it should be doing, and try to adjust it like that.

Do you know that yours is losing power from this? Is it running badly?

If so, I would try checking the vacuum advance unit is working properly (by checking the timing at idle with it connected and then with it disconnected) and just generally setting the timing right etc. The mixture lso causes problems a lot on the 8valve engines. More so than weak springs in my experience.

I could be wrong though!

:D Whel i don't know if that was the trouble on mines was running ok. before i start rebuilding engine and electrics ( i don't know how really good 1.9 GTI goes when everything is working like it should on these cars if you know what i mean ) and from now i think when i'm doing all other work on the engine that i could try to do something with these distributor springs to make it running even better after rebuilding everything ;)

Also i'm fitting flat top pistons for higher CR and i don't want to retard ignition too much, and as far as i understand this if the springs are losen then igniton is already retarded by few degree .. or ? please correct me if i'm wrong B)

I remember reading about some results from dyno testing (think that Puma Race post these results) something that they lose 10 or even 20bhp on 8v XU engines because of these losen springs ...

Can they adjust this on a rolling road or maybe in Bosch service ? if ist not a D.I.Y area ...

Vacuum advance wasn't working before i have notice that just now when doing rebuilding , i've bought new vacuum capsule .

The leading company for distributor mods are H&H ignition services, but as your in croatia they may be a bit far from you lol.

Loose springs won't affect how much advance the disributor gives, they will just affect the curve of it. I.E. if the springs go weak, you will get maximum advance earlier in the rev range than is needed, and you would undoubtably lose power through that. Maximum and minimum advance is set by two stops, which stop the centrifugal weights going any further.

They may be able to adjust your distributor on a rolling road, but i think certainly over here it's not a common thing, as it's too time consuming.

They could however do you a power run, and from that graph you would be able to see if the timing curve is right or not through the shape of the graph you get. Your rolling road operator will be able to advise you on what needs to be done if anything. Would definately reccomend you getting to a rolling road if anything just to put your mind at rest. You could start messing with it, and it not need it and yu have negative effects.
