TKH 0 Posted March 28, 2007 If its really not having it and you have hit it so hard you have smashed the inner part if you bearing out. You can if you are VERY careful use a diegrinder to weaken the outer shell and then tap it out.
pugrallye 0 Posted March 28, 2007 without using a bearing puller, oxy acetaline and two willing helpers with pry bars are necessary
kyepan 291 Posted March 28, 2007 right, cheers guys. I think the grinder option may be on the cards. as with the other knackered bearings i have tried to do, the outer race and inner race is gone, its just the inner sleeve left on the hub.. everything else is gone
TKH 0 Posted March 28, 2007 Be very careful of you do grinned. You just want to weaken it and then pry it out. Dont go through and damage everything. Just take it slow and you should be fine.
sherly 0 Posted March 28, 2007 Grinder definately. I've done this a few times on minis in the past with great success. Cut the inner race with the grinder but not all the way through then hit the base of the cut with a hammer/chisel and it should crack along the base of the cut (providing you've cut deep enough). kyepan 291 Posted March 30, 2007 so thanks guys, that worked a treat. only problem is, i think ive shagged the new bearings bashing the new drive flange in without supporting the inner race, its noisy and rough when i rotate .... is this something that will settle once its on its feet and tightened up, or should i get another set of bearings. pug_life 0 Posted March 30, 2007 cost me £20 a side to have old pushed out, new pushed in... £40 well spent as the jobs not something i'd do myself to save a few quid...
axnutty 10 Posted March 30, 2007 If its noisy then Id say something isnt right! Normally they can be a little bit stiff if the grease hasnt spread out yet, but ive never known one be noisy. Try breaking it apart and checking everything looks OK before you get another one. ..incidently a tyre lever can work very well on pulling the inner race off as well.. I think you've answered your own question Without supporting the inner race all that impact would be side load shock on the bearing. I think you shagged it TBH. kyepan 291 Posted March 30, 2007 bearings on order, going to get a garage to press them in this time.. and i'll be watching while they do it too.
pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted March 30, 2007 For all the hassle & energy spent on doing this, its got to be so much easier (& cheaper in the long run) to take them to a friendly local garage & borrow their press or ask them to do it for you. Saves the risk of damaging the hub or new bearing & can be done in under an hour. Graham.
