Guest ben19gti Posted March 27, 2007 Just picked up the 206 gti, while i was drivin it back to mine the oil temp slowly crept right up to the top, which in turn made a big STOP light come on in the process so i stopped to investigate further, i could'nt see anything drastically wrong but the oil is thin what could cause the oil temp to shoot up but the water temp stay so low? I myself am thinkin headgasket because it pressurises but it does have a whole in the rad which could be causing it to pressurise but what about oil tempwhy is this goin high??? jim21070 2 Posted March 27, 2007 It's a Pug... It'll be an electrical fault. If memory serves me, the temp gauge acts, on first ignition switch-on, as an oil level indicator and then changes roles to be a temperature gauge. Maybe it is not switching roles. This'll be controlled by the multiplexed CAN bus and could prove to be a right 'mare to fix. Everything "talks" to everything else over the bus in a similar way to computers communicating over a network. This allows the car to do clever things and when it all goes belly-up, some very strange things. Could just be a disconnected sensor. As always, check the simple things first. Generally the water temperature can go very high before significantly lifting the oil temperature. One learns to live with these perculiarities. To a much lesser extent, the gauges in my Xantia read differently when the lights are on
