Another Rear Beam Opened To Discover Bad News

Recommended Posts

mojo1997

I've recently stripped my rear beam off my L reg 1.9 Gti, it's covered 122,000 and was sat low with no rear suspension travel.

I feared the worst so purchase £250 worth of genuine peugeot parts prior to stripping, ready for some fun.

Followed the guide to remove the offset washers etc then began hammering to split the beam.

After a while the trailing arm started to move, so all was going well (or so I though). But then off came the trailing arm leaving the shaft stuck in the beam tube. Has anyone ever heard of that happening. I managed to remove the opposite end with the shaft remaining in the trailing arm, but this showed the worst. The inner bearings loo fine but the outer bearings were no longer there, what was left was what looked like black rusty cack... Some of the outer bearing needles had even inbedded themselves into the beam tube, rendering the tube as scrap.

All in all a completly knackered beam.

Does anyone local to Doncaster have a spare usable beam tube, i got a price from peugeot of £277+ VAT for a new tube. Sod that. It's either a second hand tube or a second hand complete beam. I'll post some picture's when I can.

I stripped my old 1.6GTi beam today as well. Just for something to do really. This back axle was not groaning or creaking at all, and had been lowered 30mm at some point in the past - so possibley overhauled??? This passed an MOT 3 months back with no problems and showed no signs of camber.

The outer bearings - had turned square, locked up and proved black and rusty. The shafts werent good either as you can imagine. Luckily the tube hasnt been eatern into so I've get to keep that as a spare. ;) I was amazed seeing this that the back axle was working fine when it was on the car!! Just goes to shows I suppose that you have no idea how good a second hand axle is unless you get to strip it.

When I was building up my replacement beam I got hold of a base model tube off Graham (Pugtorque) off here, so stick up a wanted post and see what you comes your way :D

Failing that get down the scrappers with a set of tools and start pulling 205 back axles to bits until you find a good one im afraid.

Jrod

I also stripped a 306 beam tonight.

Looked mint from the outside, still had the stickers on.

Opened the first side and what a mess, rust all down the shaft and bearings totally mashed.

Otherside looked like new!

Miles

As said the beam's scrap and the only thing's useable is the trailing arm's and bar's, Starting to see allot of 306 ones like Jrods and a few 106's now.
