Year Old Refurbished Rear Beam

Recommended Posts

yorkshirekowboy

hi all

i have started to notice when going round corners in my 205, when all the weights one both sides of the car, the beam would click/creek, then when the weight on the other side it clicks again?

so when it clicks when weight on right side and left.

but when i push the beam/car up and down with, with or with out handbrake on i hear nothing, just the hissing noise from the dampers!!

when i have take my rear wheels off and push the trailing arms up on both sides it clicks when it gets to a certain height, this happens on both side....strange?

is there something lose?

surly cant be bearings, as i dotn think thats a sign of it and also theres no play in the arms or nothing ;they move up and down with out the shafts moving in the tube, so no play.

any ideas,

really annoying

Check if you can move the callipers, they can make a clicking noise when conering.

check the bolts that hold the anti roll bar plates to the trailing arms haven't come loose.

yeah cheers that a common problem like?, i will check, oh its a 1.6 beam, as making a 1.9 one at the mo, just parting with 50 quid for each hub making it hard to complete :o

I wouldn't say it was common but I have seen it once before.

On each turn, rundabout or corner, you hear "clonk" sound, right? On straights, no sound?

If your answer is yes, dear friend, this sounds like worn ARB bracket teeth.

New ARB bracket or brackets fix this.

I ripped apart my 306S16 beam because of it.

yeah and the answer is yes, what a mission, but when i gave my car a thrash round corners and it went away, only a small amount of sound, but when i got in it form cold creek it goes again.

could it be what MH says?

if so easy fix?

juts thinking could it be the rear shocks need tighting?

also there isnt any play the arms that go into shafts (tested like you do to test balljoints on front have gone,..side to side, just makes arms go up and down), ;) so cos my MOT is due soon, can they fail me on the clicking sound?

No, this is not damper issue.

You need to check both ARB brackets (marked red). Take both wheels down, unbolt ARB nut and holding bolts on both sides and pull the bracket out, (together with ARB).

Worn inner teeth do not hold ARB any more, meaning with every weight transfer left-to right you get clonking sound. If there is no sound at all when driving straight, this is it. Probably just one side.

My ARB bracket was so worn that you could turn it around ARB with bare hands.

Sometimes just rotating ARB for few teeth will solve your problem.

I saw some brackets and ARBs welded togehter with few stitches, but would not reccommend this kind of fix, although it is cheap and does the trick. If you choose to weld, make sure you do only one side, the other needs to stay regular for mounting purposes.
