thermostat shouldnt hiss unless the cover is slightly loose or the seal has gone

is there any sign of water escaping?

personally id swap it, only takes a few minutes and about 10 pounds in parts

If this happens when the engine is cooling down from hot then you have a very tiny leak that is small enough to admit air but not large enough to allow significant amounts of water to escape (water has bigger molecules).

Water may be escaping but immediately evaporating and thus leaving no trace

Not an uncommon problem. I've had it on both my GTi and two Diesels.

On a slighty different theme, it may have been covered a thousand times before, how long does it take for the cooling fan to kick in when sat in traffic. even in winter it only takes about 5/10 mins for it to come on. Could my stat be stuck closed.

Have bleed the hoses and checked fluid level, heater works fine to.

Sounds about right to me. If the 'stat is stuck you'll know about it, either by the engine running very cool or very hot. My stat stuck partially open and the temperature never went above the second bar and worse, the oil temperature gauge never moved off its end-stop. It now rides 1 gauge bar up now.

For reference, mine, with an 88degree 'stat normally sits on the third gauge bar and the fan cuts in on slow speed just above the forth. I've never yet had the fans go to high speed. The temperature always rapidly falls just on slow.

just did a search because this happenend on mine today, can i ask, what parts do i actually need, is there a gasket i need to buy or just some sealant of some sort?

If just the sealant, can i ask what type of sealant i would need to buy please.

I'm assuming im gonna have to bleed the water system first before doing this, which i've had no experience of, is it a piece of piss or more difficult than i should expect.

Sorry for hi-jacking but i'm gathering this is the point in searching for topics already written?

if you buy the housing from pug it 'should' come with the rubber o ring. bleeding is not a problem as your removing the stat which is one of the highest points on the engine. i usually just refill the header tank and it naturally bleeds itself out.

yes mate, the search comes in very handy ^_^

thanks for the quick answer,

so you're saying i dont actually need to bleed the system because the water wont actually be there when the engines cold,

just refill with water and coolant when done?

water will be there, but as its one of the highest points on the engine, you wont actually loose a great deal.
