Competition Shocks...

Recommended Posts

Longfield

It's time to update my shocks on my track car - and it's a track/race car only now, so no road driving at all. Many folks these days tend to favour GAZ or at least so I've read... but I have a couple of questions which I'm hoping other track-day tarts might be able to help me with please.

1: What's the difference between the GAZ gold range and the GAZ competition range - I really can't see a difference? I'm guessing there's got to be a reason why they're different but as yet i don't know.

2. Is anyone using the KW Variant 2 on track and what are folk's opinions as to the control of these?

3. Both the GAZ comp and KW V2 are around the £750 mark RRP [but through a contact I could get the GAZ cheaper] but i'm wondering if my little track car will perform noticely better [and is it worth the price?!] if I end up paying £1750 for something like AST's 3way shocks?

If it helps the set up of my car is: I'm attaching rose jointed bottom arms to the front as well as uprating the rear torsion bars [still haven't decided on 21mm or 23mm yet] and 24mm ARB at the back.

Your thoughts/experiences will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Longfield.

My preference is stiffer at t he rear. Jonmurchie only spend something like £700 on his AST's, I assume that's not the 3 way adjustables, but don't think thy would be needed on a track car on smooth surfaces; so dont waste your money

Re your point 2:

I've been using KW2 last 3 years. I'm very satisfied with them, quality great and no leaks. My personal opinion is that they are a bit soft for race use only. (front springs around 190 lbs, I think 225-250 may works better) Rear end seems ok.

All depends how you want to set up the car. May people prefer rock stiff rear end and a softer front to gain grip.

Espen are you the chap you had his car featured in a mag last nov? If so, who made your shock's top castor adjustment item? I remember thinking I was impressed with it. Would you recommend the item to a sole track car?

You don't see many race cars with Gaz items on... That should give you a clue!

Bilsteins are very good. I have their tarmac items, custom lower arms, 25mm front arb, 30mm rear arb and 23mm tbs on my race car.

What with Leda going under (See thread on this forum) and I'm sure one of Leda's old people switched over to Gaz they can only be onto a good thing, Loads of people used Leda in the Stock Hatch series but as budget's increased Pro-flex etc are being used on the front runner's,

I know the early Gaz's where only rebound damping so not very good at all but cheap, now the double adjustable's seem fair but priced in a competive market.

I'm thinking of running KW on my 306 but still need to look into this but I;ve only heard good report's.

Pdd144C - what bilsteins are you referring to? I've only seen their road car based, non adjustable shocks for sale.

Thank you all for your help too.

Just for the record unless you are going to run slicks, imho some of the rear arb and tb sizes mentioned above really will be way too stiff

I'd stick with what you mentioned in your own post

Billies get good feedback from the racing fraternity but they are non-adjustable, really you want to have the choice/ability to progressively soften off the front until you are happy with it. I would have recommended Leda's, but as said they are now defunct. Miles could well be right though regarding Gaz's future. I have no experience of AST but am told that for race use they probably have the edge on Leda's
