Re-thread Head Bolt Holes?

I've recently bought a 1.9 GTI engine to rebulid in my spare time and sort to the spec I want before I find a car to put it in. A long way round I know but I can't afford the car at the mo (just going to be a weekender!)

 

Problem is it appears a few of the head bolts have been tightened so much they've stripped the threads in the block :huh:

The engine came from a crash damaged 205 so don't know if the crash could have caused it but find it unlikely.

 

Was wondering if it is possible to re-thread the holes?

 

Any advice is always welcome :)

yes you can have it helicoiled or tapped out to a larger thread but the problem with larger thread is finding suitable bolts, although a good machine shop will be able to sort you out with them.

Best option is ring a few local machine shops and get some quotes from them.

If you get them drilled out and tapped to the next size (12mm vs 11mm) then I think the headbolds from the later iron block XUs will fit.

If you got the confidence to do the job your-self to keep the costs down.

 

You can buy the Heli-coil kit and order the extra long coils to suit the length in the block and you do not need to drill the holes as a tap is supplied to cut a new thread for the coils from the existing thread.

 

The sets I have always used are made in Austraila, most engineering supplies keep them and can order the coils as you want.

 

And you may need to Loctite the coils insitu with a high strength, as you cant bottom out the coils in the block as is the best condition for the recoil.
